help with my 9 inch

Hey guys, I bought a used moser 9 inch for a 4th gen planning to put it in my camaro and I have have some decisions to make. I has a 430 gears and spool with 35 spline axles in it. I know it's way overkill for the car but it was a good deal. I have a 12 bolt in my firebird with an eaton so I have no experience with a spool. Unlike my firebird, this camaro will be my daily driver and it has an auto trans. My question is are spools streetable, like can my wife drive the car if need be(she drives a nissan normally), or does it become too difficult with weather and turns. I have read so many things about this about this topic and it goes either way. I am going to put 373's anyway but not sure about the spool. From what I have read a Detroit locker is my only choice for the 35 spline axles. The plans for the car will be to install a built 396 with a projected 410-440ish to wheels with 2800 stall. Mostly street with some track time. Any advice for me?

just go with the spool. if shes careful it wont be a problem.

a spool is great for the track, they're great on the high way, if you'll remember to remember it's there... they aren't that bad, problem comes into play at very sharp low speed turning; examples, backing out the drive way and makeing a 90* turn, or pulling into parking spots at walmart makeing a 90* turn at very low speeds, it will wear the rear tires a little faster than a posi will, because they're fighting each other.

Other wise you won't know it's there, changeing lanes or carveing corners at normal speeds.

I have a true-trac with 31 spline axles in my 9" and you can hear the tires fight each other makeing slow 90* turns too? If it's for a car that will see the street, I'd say spend the extra few dollars for a true-trac, posi, locker when you switch the gears. I have motive ultra light 3.75 gears and love them, no noise at all.

Yea I agree with you guys. I am going to give it a shot and try it out. If it sucks then I will look for some used 31 or 33 spline axles and diff unit. I got a buddy who sets up rear ends for me so I save a ton in labor. So spool it is. thanks again for your imputs.

Still want to swap parts?

I have the 9" with a spool and agree with what has been said...they are fine on the street and at highway speeds but are not great for low-speed, sharp turns (parking lots, u-turns, etc.)

Well I guess I will live with that, at least I know it it will take the abuse. I am just glad there are people out there like you that that have done this before can that the guess work if it for me.
