18"s W/ 275's or stock 16's??

What do you guys think I will have better results at the dragstrip with? 18” x 9" ultralight wheels (20lbs each) with Kumho ecsta mx tires 275/35/18 or stock wheels with stock tire size with V rated rubber? I ran a 13.7 with the stock wheels, but on the street I find the 18” wheels seem to spin a little more off the line due to less sidewall. I am not sure if the extra width on the tires on the 18” rims will make up for the extra flex in the sidewall that the stock wheels have. Which one should net me a better time at the track? Thanks in advance!

P275 50R 15 MT Drag Radials on 15" x 10" rims will hook better. They also have 16" that will hook better. Smaller rim and taller sidewall is a good combination for launching. You probably want the 26"tall tire... Not the 28"

thanks for the info, but I already have the 18" wheels and I have the stock ones.. I am not in the market to buy any other tires or wheels, I just want to know which set of rims and rubber would be better at the strip in your guys opinion...

In that case, it doesn't really matter. You're still not gonna hook for sh*t.

Until you're willing to throw a sticky tire on those stockers use whichever one you want.

You may be right, but one combo has to be better over the other.. Plus I ran a 13.7 with the stock wheels last year so I think I can "hook" a little bit.. I am not looking for get slicks or you suck type, I am looking for what combination out of the two is better.. I know slicks are better, but I don't have slicks or money to buy slicks... I just want to go to the track and have a little fun, and I am just looking for opinions on what set up would be better in other peoples opinion...

Whatever is on the stock rims will have more sidewall which is more forgiving at the launch. Depending on track condition, weight transfer, tire pressure and your skills with the clutch I think an argument could be made the stock rims will work better. However on a slippery track the 18's may be an advantage because they will slow down your launch and possible make it easier to hook.

Trial and error will be the best way to find out. If it were me, I would go with the stock rims and get some drag radials, even if they are used, for the track.

Mmhmm. I realize that you wanna get the most out of whatever you have available. But they'll probably be pretty even with each other. You should throw some Nittos or BFGs or even the new M/T drag radial that is out on those stockers. It won't be overkill but it also won't be like driving on grease.

I can't get **** for traction with stock tires. Much better with 275/40/18's. It depends on your tires too.

I hear you with the drag radials, but I am dead broke right now.. I just want to have a little fun with what I have right now.. I am gonna try the 18's and see what happens. I already got a 13.7 with my stock wheels and hercules tires.. I'll post after I run with the 18's and tell you guys what worked better for me...

18's + M6 = no hook. You'll be a little better off with stock.

Re: 18"s W/ 275's or stock 16's??

I have a "G-Tech" gizmo that supposably tells tells you your quarter mile time. When I run in the country roads on my own, I can pull off the same times with both my 16" stockers and the 18's. Will I see a major difference at the track? I am going this friday if it doesn't rain...

Re: 18"s W/ 275's or stock 16's??

I went to the track and used my stock wheels with some Hercules "V" rated tires, stock size... My best run was 13.685 @ 104.87... It is a new best for me and I am pretty happy with that for a car with very few mods.... It's also with a 2.2 60'..

Re: 18"s W/ 275's or stock 16's??

It's been a while now but I just thought I would give an update.
I ran with the 18's and Kumho's and I have a new best of 13.5 with a 103.?? MPH & a 2.1 60'.. I dont have the slip in front of me for exact MPH but it was 103 for sure.. I ran in previous occasions with a best MPH of 104.85. I am really happy with this time, and I am shocked at how the low profile tires gripped.. I got 4 runs in, all at either 13.5 & 13.6.. Couldn't get in the 104 MPH range again though.. The same way the car is driven on the road is how I went to the track. Only weight reduction was the spare tire & jack.. My last run at the track was about 2-3 months ago.. I want to go again now that it is cooler out and see if I can beat my new best.. I post again if I do actually get out...

Re: 18"s W/ 275's or stock 16's??

It is impossible to compare accurately the results without knowing the weather conditions for DA. Also, your launch and shift points need to be exact and even your exact staging position is necessary. 1 mph could be accounted for simply by a difference in engine temp, or sunlight as opposed to cloud cover, or shifting 200rpms higher, or whatever other variable there is.

Perhaps throw the stock tires in the back and change them at the track with the 18's. It may give you a better idea of the difference between them in terms of performance.

In reality, I bet that with a set of drag radials on the stock rims, and a decently prepared track, you could be hooking 1.8 sixty foot times. Just be sure to pre-load the driveline at the launch to help keep the rear intact.
