Is there a difference B/T programmed shift points and actual shift points?

In regards to an A4 car with a loose convertor what/if any is the difference between the actual shift point and the programmed shift point?

I had the shift points set at 6,800, but I am slamming into the rev limiter at 7k (OBD1). I can't tell if the tranny is slipping or it is the slop from the convertor.

I thought I had read somewhere on this board that there is a difference. If anyone has any input I would appreciate it.

-- I rechecked the fluid and it is full.

Thanks,
Pete.

Usually around 300 rpm. The 2-3 shift seems to take longer, probably 500 rpm or so.

Drop your shift rpm by 200 and you should be fine.

Do you have any logging software to see exact shift rpms?

Bryan from PCMforless has dropped the shifts for me twice now (with excellent turnaround) but it won't upshift unless I lay off the gas. I'll email him to see where the 1-2 and 2-3 upshift points are set.

I'll have to download some free logging software to get some more info.

Thanks,
Pete

What stall rpm do you have?

WildThing94Z 11-09-2002 12:54 PM

It's a no name Convertor that is supposed to be 3000 stall. It was originally built for my old combo which was bolt-ons and spray (I now have a 383 solid roller).

According to Bryan the 1-2 shift point is set at 6250 and the 2-3 is set at 6050, but it is still slipping once the engine approaches it's peak power curve under 3/4 to full throttle. I'm beginning to think the convertor is junk and cannot handle the new power.

In normal driving conditions it shifts nice and firm, it's just when I want to drop the hammer that I am getting problems. I'm pretty sure that I can rule out programming and the tranny itself, just wanted to get some second opinions.

OR, does anyone think that this could be related to the high stall OBD1 stall issue?

Thanks,
Pete.
