Bigger Cam & Idle Misfire Problem

Well I am getting an occassional P0300 now with the new cam at idle. I was looking at some schematics on my car and was wondering. Has anyone ever tried to delete the Low Res signal from the crank to the PCM and tie the low Res Signal from the Opti into the PCM input for the crank signal and successfully trick the computer? Hope that question makes sense. My big concern would be are the signal voltages the same? Or is there a much easier way to fix this problem that I am unaware of. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks Corey

The Opti low res pulse is "irregular", and would probably cause more of an upset with the crank velocity calculations that the PCM makes to identify misfires. Of course there are 8 cylinder "pulses" included in the low res output, but every other cylinder has a different pulse duration.... look at the slots in the disc... and there is a unique number of degrees of rotation for every other cylinder, alternating with 4 same-length pulses for the other 4 cylinders. That's how the PCM knows which injector to fire.

You would also find that the Opti pulses are even sloppier than the crank pulses, because the cam is subject to irregularities in velocity due to slop in the timing chain, water pump loads, etc.

The easiest way is to delete the test via a reprogram. I used LT1 Edit.

Thanks for the posts guys! I was trying to figure out a way to trick the stock computer program, but I guess the best thing to do is just reprogram it. Again Thanks

Does LT1_edit or Tunercat actually stop the misfire test from running, or does it just stop the mil light from illuminating when the misfire code is set?

LT1 Edit disables the diagnostic test.
