95 LT1 OBD1 with 16pin(have tune already) want to start tuning.

Here is my situation. I have a tune from MADZ28 and the car ran great on it. I recently changed back to 3.42s from 4.10s and a different tire size too, and want to start tuning the car myself (no problems with Ion).

I want to be able to scan the car first and pull the file and store it first thing! So I can always go back and then change my current tune.

Also I am having some running and SES problems NOT RELATED TO THE TUNE, that I want to scan and diagnose with a scanning/datalogging software to figure out the cause of this new problem.

Whats the best software, my big concern is storing my tune file first and then editing it. I want to keep the original in the "vault"

Re: 95 LT1 OBD1 with 16pin(have tune already) want to start tuning.

To read PCM, alter tune and reload you need a Tuner program and ALDL cable I recommend Tunercat 'Tuner' program you can download it and try it for 30 days free, $69.95 after that, but you need a definition file $EE that costs $19.00. Another program, TunerPro RT is completely free ($30.00 donation is optional) but is more complex for a new tuner. Also it does not write to PCM (load tunes) so you need to buy TunerCats Winflash (30 days free, then $19.00) if you use TunerPro RT
Then to read codes reset them and log the car you need logging software, TTS Datamaster EE is free for 20 logs, then costs $119.00 and is a about the best out there for OBD1. Freescan is free and can do the basic logging job, no graphs, no transmission data, no AC data.

Bottom line for a cable $70-100 and a $19.00 definition file (tunercat) or free Winflash (TunerPro RT) you can get started.
in tuning. And w/a cable and datamaster or freescan) you can play get started for free with logging. Then make a decision on what products to purchase.

Remember these are only tools for reading and altering data, they do not com with instructions on what things should look like and/or what data to change. They assume the user understands what to view and what to change. Sort of like buying a hammer, the instructions tell you how to use it, but don't tell you how to build anything.

One thing to be aware of is that the tables that get scaled when you change gears should not be scaled again if you change gears again because there will be some scaling errors, You should start with stock original tables when changing the rear gears.
