I just picked up a posi rear out of a 79 T/A w/ 2.41's. I've never worked on one and know nothing about them, ( the smell of gear lube makes me sick!). I figured I could just change the gears and be done, but now I'm finding out otherwise. Whats the highest (numerically) gear I can run with the carrier thats in it, I want 3.73. Also, someone told me that theres some kind of spacer made so I can change the gears to 3.73 without changing the carrier.

The break is 2.56 down, 2.73 up. You can buy a ring gear spacer so you can use a 2.73 up ring and pinion on your carrier. Here is one source:
