Is it my fuel pump?
 

On the way home half a mile from home, I thought my throttle rod came off again. Car stalled out (which was unusual) and coasted to a stop on the side of the road, popped the hood open - throttle rod still connected. Tried to start it, turns over but wont stay on. Maybe I ran out of gas. Gauge says a few hairs from empty. Ran home and got the Mustang and the gas can - put 2 gallons in the Camaro. Still no go.

Car was running strong for 20 miles in 110 degree heat at 70 mph. I even had the AC on for part of it. About 2 miles from the freeway on the main street to my house, I coasted to a stop - the motor still running but when I stopped, the car stalled.

Fuel pump?

No flooding - car turns over strong but doesnt stay on.

If its the pump - what do you reccomend as a replacement? I am swapping out my dual 500s and c26 intake for a Performer eps and 1406 600 cfm. Mild cam.

Does it start right back up after it dies or do you have to crank it for a while. ect ect.... If it dies and does not crank, hop out and pull the breather, open the throttle and see if you get gas out of the squirters. If you don't then the bowls are empty of fuel and your pump is probably shot.

This also could be a vapor lock problem.

If your going to run a mechanical pump try a Holley. I have ran them in the past and have had GREAT success.

I just read your post again.... It did not crank back up. Very well could be the pump or an ignition problem. Are you running a points style iginiton or Hei??

Thanks for the reply. Vapor lock has been thrown around on this but it isnt getting flooded and I seriously have to pump the pedal to get enough fuel in to get it to turn over but it simply wont stay on.

Pull the air cleaner off, hit the throttle and see if you get any fuel from the squirters(should be a strong stream). If you don't the bowls are dry and the pump is bad. My guess is the diaphram in the pump is bad.

So - we checked out the fuel lines - fuel is flowing. We pulled the plugs and all 8 are sparking. BElieve it or not, I did not find a fuel filter so the carbs may have been clogged? I guess it still could be the pump huh once its heated.

I am swapping the carbs and intake now and will see what happens. I have a new mech fuel pump just in case I will need to replace that.

If the engine won't start no matter what you do, and you are running and HEI, my suggestion is you toasted the module. I had that happen as I turned into my driveway many years ago. The engine just shut off like a light switch, and would not restart no matter what I did. Turns out it was the module. Replaced it, and it fired right back up.

It turns over and fires but shuts right down each time.
