Pro Touring Qs

I'm begining to think of starting a 1st gen pro touring car. Is any years better or worse than others? I was kinda leaning towards a 68 for the smoother lines (no window vents and no fender grill things). Would a 6 cyl be a good, cheaper alternative than a v8 car since I'll probably be upgrading suspension, brakes, engine, and drivetrain regardless of what it originally had? Obviously this is going to be custom type car so I don't want to "destroy" a real nice all original car.

Thanks for the input

Yeah i think the 68 is a pretty good car to starrt with, personally i like the 69 better but the 68 are pretty good also. A 6 cyl is a good alternative i guess i mean you can make plenty of power with it if ya use the right stuff, it all depends on how much money you want to put into it. If it were me i would put a 302 in it as it proved to be a very good motor for the touring car.

engine wise I was thinking of a 396 stroker LT1 backed with a t-56...kinda high tech, with lots of power. Are there any modifications to a 6cyl car that I'll have to do to get a v8 to fit. I figure I'll have to change the rearend to handle that much power.

Sounds like a strong motor but i would think that the 396 would have alot of lowend power and not as much on high end, but it all depends on what you want to do with the car. You deffinatly need to get a very good rear end like a 10 bolt 3.73 or something around in there. you may have to change your driveshaft a little to shorten it or make it longer to fit your new tranny, and maybe the motor mounts but im not sure about that you need to check into it. But it really does sound like it will be a strong car and it is a good project so let us know how it goes.

You do have to change the motor mounts, (I think). The LT1 still has the same physical bolt positions so you can buy some standard sbc motor mounts which match up to your frame mounts. (Narrow/tall or wide/short).

For cutting of the driveline, I strongly urge you to figure out the exact length you need before cutting. I had mine cut 2 inches (th350 --> 4l60e) and then had to have it trimmed approximately one more inch when I put in the 8.5 10-bolt rear end.

The LT1 is a good choice because you can make high-tech power fairly cheeply (ha ha) because there are so many sbc performance parts made for the F-body versus going to something like the LS1.

Any more questions? Fire away. You also may want to try a search here and over at www.camaros.net
