help with my 69 camaro

Hey everyone I just need to clarify some things.. This 69 camaro that I am about to buy for a steal has z28 badges but correct me if im wrong.. z28's only came with 4 speed manual trannys right? Also they came stock with racing stripes? I have the badge trim and i see no code that would prove that it is a z28. I have uploaded pictures to the gallery if anyone can help me identify this car. Im pretty sure its not a z28 but could it be a ss or rs? i appreciate all of the help!!

You may have noticed... not a lot of 1st Gen owners on this site. Might get lucky and one of them will see this.

You are correct about the transmission and stripes but there's a lot more information needed. Take your question and pictures of the firewall tag to <http://www.camaros.net> and post it in the Tag Team section. Also, there are VERY knowledgeable people at Camaro Research Group. The truth is out there!

Be advised that there are more '69 Z28 cars running around today than were ever produced by the factory!

There are always a way around cloning a car. If you are getting a good deal then it doesnt matter. I have swapped out vin tags so you cant go by that anymore. I believe it was said that 1969 camaros were the most cloned car ever. I hope it is a z28. Good luck and follow cnorton's advise. Its always cool to see what a car started with. My 1969 chevelle ss was optioned to the moon but over the years someone stripped it down to race it. The 70's gas cruch caused lots of big block cars become 307 powered.

Re: help with my 69 camaro

Hello Alex,

Just wondering if you had purchased that 69? The trim tag doesn't tell you much other than where and when it was built, the color combination( frost green with midnight geen vinyl top, the S in the paint code means it had white stipes from the factory), and the interior iformation. The stripes were an option for any camaro in 69, so it may or may not mean anything. Have checked if the engine vin matches the dash vin? If they are a match, then it would be worth checking the casting dates and part numbers on the heads. That info could indicate if it was a real Z. A lot of cars blew up engines at the track back inthe day, so it could be a service engine. A replacement engine will not make it less than a Z, it just will not be numbers matching. Period correct is still very cool. Also, if the engine vin is any year later than 69, it can not be a 302. Every first gen Z was a 302 small block. Anything else is a fake. If the engine vin is wrong, there is nothing wrong with building a tribute car, as long as you don't try to pass it off as something else.

Good Luck,

PJ
