Electrical

I've got a few wiring questions. The cars been apart for four years, I remember what wires came from where, but not exactly where they went on the specific part.

1. I bought a "1 wire" alt. but I have what I guess would be pos. and neg. wires coming out of the harness. I know that the red wire goes to the bolt on the back of the alt. but what do I do with the black?

2. I think the old H.E.I. dist. only had a power wire to the pos. side of the coil, and a wire from the tach to the neg. The new dist is a Mallory Unilite and a Mallory Pro Master coil. Does the Neg side of the coil need to be grounded?

3. I hooked up the starter and put a set of jumper cables on the dead battery to see if it would turn over. The starter clicks and the fan turned about 1/4 in. I let the battery charge off the jumper cables for a few minutes and tried it again several times with the same results. The last time I tried it I got smoke from what looked like the pos. terminal on the batt. Not wanting a flaming pile of dung in my garage where my Camaro was I figured I'd see if I could get some advice.

Any help would be appreciated.

1. just hook up the red wire, the other is for the factory gauge or idiot light
2. do not ground the neg. side of coil, neg. side go's to dist.
3. check all of your battery cable connections. clean and retighten them.
