I would like to start restoration on a 67 SS that has been on blocks in a shed for 20 years. Is it possible to separate the engine from the 4 speed and pull it out by itself? I am not sure how much the rafters can support. Also, is there a good write up on Camaro Z28 on the project? I have a 1967 Chilton hard copy Auto Repair Manual. The one that tells how to repair all makes.

Yes! Separate the engine at the bell housing, the bolts are a little hard to get at. Support the bellhousing and trans. so they don't hang on the trans. mount.
You should then be able to lift the engine enough to get it above the engine mounts, then pull it forward and out.
Believe it or not, the engine may not need an overhaul. How many miles were on it when it was parked. Have you pulled the valve covers to see how the oil looks, or tried to rotate the engine by hand?

 

Thanks for the replies. The engine did put out quite a lot of blue smoke when the car was retired. It had never had any work done other than carburetor and ignition and had about 180,000 miles and has a 3:70 rear end. No knocking, though. It did get regular oil changes. I have not tried to turn it over, however. Do I take the plugs out and put a breaker bar on the front hub bolt and try to turn? I never thought its smoking could be all valve problems. What would be a good procedure to check that out?

 

With 180,000 and sitting for 20yrs. "I" would just go ahead and rebuild it.

 

Yeah, that's what I was thinking until your suggestion. I could remove the heads and inspect the bore and check for piston play. The car is not going to be a daily driver.

As already commented, yes, you can separate the block/trans and pull. From your first thread you mentioned "not sure how much the rafters can support" ...I would be very hesitant to even try that.
Borrow or pick-up an engine hoist to do the job


To reiterate what others have mentioned, ...go for rebuilding at this point.

If you are not already on 'Team Camaro' (Team Camaro), it is a site WELL worth checking out. A lot of 1st gen owners hang there...
