Building a stroker hopefully

I just took out the stock motor from my 75 Camaro( you know the one that made 145 hp from the factory) and was thinking of making a stroker motor from it. I have heard that you can put in a crankshaft from a 400 ci engine and make it a 383, but I am sure that is not all I'll need. Has anyone else done this, and what parts will I need?

Thx,

Sol

don't bother tracking down a 400 crank and having it turned - nowadays, there are tons of kits with a 383 crank (3.75" stroke, 350 journals) and the proper size pistons to go with your 350 rods...

the big things are:
balancing - alot of people go with an external balance, which requires a 400 balancer, and a special balance plate on the flywheel, or a 400ci flywheel.
You can go internal balance, but it might cost you more at the machine shop

rod/cam clearance - gotta check the rod bolt/cam lobe clearance - it gets very close. Usually gotta grind some off the shoulder of the rod bolt

rod/oil pan rail - grind a bit of clearance out of the oil pan rail on the block for rod clearance.

you will probably also want to do a little porting on the heads for all those extra cubes...

Do yourself a favor and get rid of those stock heads. You probably have 882 castings which are total trash. Don't waste $ on porting them, just get some Vortec heads and an intake to go with it. You'll be far more power out of it than ported smoger heads.

Some places to look for kits: summitracing.com, jegs.com, northernautoparts.com

Also talk to your local machine or speed shop to see if they have any deals. If the stroker doesn't seem feasible and you still want something a bit different check out a 6.0" rod 350. I've seen them totally run away from stock length 5.7" rod 350s at the track.

Good luck on your project!
