Best Setup for '67 Camaro SS

I would like to know the best engine build that people use for the '67 Camaro SS... I want it street-legal, but fast... Any ideas?

There is NO such ting as BEST!! Decide how your going to use your car first. i.e. daily driver, with a few strip weekneds, SCCA racer, proracer, or show car, etc. Then come back and ask, "What would be good for that kind of use?"

P.S. Welcome to the board!!

My main thing would be a few drag races on the weekends and a daily driver. I've been looking up several engines and parts and I'm kinda stuck...

I think the key here is daily driver. Which usually means you want something that has a good idle and doesn't rattle your brains on a trip. With the 67 you can easlily put just about any engine in the bay, big block or small block. So now you have to deside how much money you want to spend, and which motor. You mentioned in your other post about a 396ci. This certainly would meet the requirements you've layed out so far. A faily mild build should net you 400 to 450hp. Your really only limitted by your pocket book.
You also have to deside how your going to do this, i.e. buy a built engine or build your own. Buying a complete built engine is easier and probably cheaper in the end, but does require a larger initial investment. Check the Vendors link!
Don't know what else to tell you, to many variables. And I'm sure others will have different opinions.

If I was doing a 1st gen project it would have to have a big block. Like the ZZ572

So I found me a ZZ572 Big Block, and it puts out 720hp out the box... What transmission would I use for this...? I have a 9" Rear housing with 3.89 gears...

Here's the engine.... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-19201334/

If you still want an automatic that is still streetable I would say a good, built turbo 400 should work.

I would do a LS for a street car if the $$$ were there.

ElectronBlue94Z 07-23-2010 09:52 PM

I would definately go LS motor with fuel injection for street car. I would NOT go with the 720hp 572. Thats basically a race motor and is a nightmare for daily use. My buddy has one in a 66 vette. Look for a 6.0 truck motor in local salvage yards. A good cam & headers should put you near 500HP and a great daily driver.

LT/LS for sure would be the best streetable motor. BRP has a swap kit designed for the first gen and just about every other gm car out there. all there parts are design to bolt right in without modifications. check out there site BRPHotrods.com

It's really a matter of taste and how you want to use the car. Take a look at mine and feel free to ask me any questions.

I think it's funny that some are suggesting LS motors because after having a solid roller 502 I am now considering pulling it and dropping in an LS motor.

The main reason I am considering the LS motor is driveability. In its current set up I am on the 10's on motor only and I think I have plenty of room for improvement but I would like to drive it more often.

I would like to follow your progress if you don't mind. Post pics for us to see!

The options are limitless, we drop 750hp pump gas 502's in them with Tremec boxes. Mild 489 short deck motors that make 500 at the tires, Gen 1 SBC in anything from 300hp stock type builds to 500hp at the tires solid roller road race motors with T56 transmissions.

And then....my favorite is to use an LS motor as has been said multiple times - you can't beat the new technology in performance per dollar. And personally for my own vehicles I will never go back to a carburetor.

I also greatly prefer small block motors in cars.

Best advise is to go over to camaros.net. ALOT of info. Sign up and use the search feature.

Good luck

:yes::yes::yes::yes::yes:

my 67 has a crate 510hp 408ci small block and a tko600 trans. I love it but if i had the money, i would do what electronblue said. Keep in mind, you need mounts, electrics, fuel system, etc etc etc. LS= $
