What Amp to Power 2 10" Type-Rs?
What Amp to Power 2 10" Type-Rs?
Hey guys, I've finally gotten the cash to upgrade my system.. I've decided on two 10" Apline Type-R's, now I need to find out what amp(s?) to get to power them. I read that one guy has a JBL 1200.1, which would be in my price range..but if I can get something better thats possible too. I'd like to keep things under 400$ for the amp.. Also, for wiring, do you guys know of any specific place/brand to get the wiring kit for, or just go to best buy and grab their stuff? Thanks in advance..
Edit: Alright, after reading around, I'm not sure abou Type-R's either.. Basically my budget is 800$ give or take, I have the head unit and I have the box (room for 2 10's) so I just need the amp, subs, and wiring. Basically I want the best bang for my buck for the type of music I listen to (rock, metal, little bit of techno).. I like my music LOUD.
Edit: Haha I need to stop looking around. What do you guys think about a 10" Drivers side stealthbox with a 10w6v2 and a 500/1? Anything better for the price range?

Re: What Amp to Power 2 10" Type-Rs?
I run a single 10" Type R. The amp I use is the Alpine MRD-M300 (300 Watts RMS, 600 Max @ 2 ohms). They don't sell it anymore because they upgraded the model and added 50 watts to it. IMO either the old one or the new one makes a perfect match. If you were running 2 10"s I would just recommend running 2 of the Alpine amps. Thats what I plan on doing eventually when I get a second sub. If I can't find same amp that I have now (since they don't make them anymore) then I will just upgrade my old amp to the newer model and get a second one. I have had many systems before, and heard many others. I have never heard a single 10" hit so hard. The key is to setting it up right. If you don't set the amp up right or wire it right, it's gonna sounds like crap no matter what you buy. Gotta know what your doing. Takes many hours to set an amp up correctly to get it to sound it's best. Whatever you decide to do, take your time setting it up. It's worth it.
BTW, I get my stuff from www.hookedontronics.com. They have the cheapest prices on the net. Also, the new amp is model MRD-301. It goes for $168.

Re: What Amp to Power 2 10" Type-Rs?
Anyone have any opinions on this?
2 10" Type-R's with a JBL 1200.1
2 10" Type-R's with 2x Alpine MRD-M300 (Or something similar)
1 10w6v2 with a 500/1
1 8w7 with a 500/1
Man, this sucks.. I want my system now, funny how much my stock speakers suck now that I'm looking to upgrade them.

Re: What Amp to Power 2 10" Type-Rs?
Well, I had two 10" Type R's. Ran them off of an MTX 6500D so each sub saw ~300w RMS. It really pounded, and back then I didn't know a whole lot about car audio and I was happy.
I then sold those and bought two 8W7's and two 500/1's. From my experience, it's better to run one big amp than two smaller amps. You'll be hard pressed to gain match both amps by ear so you may have one sub working harder than the other (bad for the one sub, and you're not getting the output that your system would be capable of).
Needless to say, the two 8W7's completely blew the two 10" Type R's out of the water. It wasn't even close. The 8's were way louder, and sounded so much better. Super clean bass, very clear definition between note changes and could be pushed to huge volume levels.
If you don't mind losing your T-Top storage space, I would do the single 8" ported in the recommended enclosure (The sub comes with plans for a ported box). You'll be amazed.

BTW, you really can't compare 2 W7's with 2 Type R's. It's like comparing apple and oranges. They are totaly different price ranges. The only Alpine you could compare the W7 to would be the Type X, both out of his price range.
Re: What Amp to Power 2 10" Type-Rs?
Actually my price range really isn't the problem, but right now I'm looking for something to hold me over. I plan within the next few months to upgrade to something like 2 10w7s.. I was planning on waiting, but right now I'm just fed up with my crappy sound quality...so its time to upgrade. I'm looking for the cheaper alternative thats going to do me good for alittle while. Would Type R's and Alpine amps fit that bill, or should I be looking elsewhere?
Re: What Amp to Power 2 10" Type-Rs?
Nope.
500/1 works wicked with a 10W7. Did a customers B4000 with one sealed, and it was louder and hit lower than his two 10W3V2's.
Putting a 10W7 and 500/1 into my buddy's 2004 Celica ported, and it should ****. One of my co-workers had a 500/1 and 10W7 and sold it because it was "Too loud". He just wanted something to fill in the bottom end and downgraded to an 8W7.
