Upgrading wiring
Upgrading wiring
I had upgraded my wiring for the alternator to battery connection with a 4 guage and added a 4 guage ground wire going to the negtative terminal as well.
After disconnecting and reconnecting the battery numerous times over the last month for installing new mods, the bolts that screw into the battery ripped the threads out of the battery terminals so I'm converting to top post connectors.
Would it do any good to upgrade the black wire that goes from the negative battery terminal to just outside the red connection junction? I already have a 4 guage ground going to that battery terminal.
Could I upgrade any other wires while I'm at it?

The bigger the better. Just a quick note. That red plastic junction box is actually a ground spot. Yes Yes I know. It has a + on it and it's red..... but it's ground. If you already have an upgraded ground wire from battery to chassis that is the same size or larger then your stereo power wire.... then you will not gain anything.
And 4g from the alternator to the battery??!?!? What are you thinking?!?!?! Oh wait. I've got 1/0awg from the alt.!!!!

There are only 3 wires that should be upgraded. alternator to battery +, battery to ground and engine block to chassis ground. If your amps are not connected directly to the battery (if you have them connected to the red terminal) then you should upgrade the batteyr + to the red terminal wire too.
Make sure you crimp and solder all the o-ring terminals on for the best connection.

I knew there was a ground right there somewhere. Can tell I haven't been under my hood in a while huh?
And just a quick note DO NOT connect your amps to the red box. Then you would be pulling mega current through the stock wiring from the battery. The only time this would be safe, would be if you used a small enough fuse for that gauge wire. Kinda defeating the purpose....
What that red box is, is a very large fuseable link. Basically if you want you can hook your amps there, but... if they're large enough... you're going to have some major issues with that thing blowing/starving your amps.
It's fine to hook your amps up to the red distro post. I have my main power wire hooked up to it an I'm drawing about 100Amps. It's better to hook up directly to the battery or upgrade the wire from the red box to the positive battery terminals though. I connected it to the red box and planned on upgrading the battery and alternator wiring but so far I haven't got around to it. Works fine though. The stock wire is so short it can carry a lot of current already. It would be a different story if the terminal was further away from the battery.
