What amp/subs are you running. What was the gauge of the power ground and speaker wires? Did you use an inline fuse on the power wire and if so what size?
These answers will help us answer.

ok well heres what i do know, the install was done by a local audio shop, and they were trying to impress me becuz its the first ive had nething done there and they wanted to keep my business (i know this). anyways, the ground wire is fairly small, id say no more than 14awg. and the powerwire is run to a cap first then the amp, no inline fuse that i know of, except its wired to the fuse box in the front, its a Usacoustics 300 watt amp, and a jl 10w0-4, has been workin perfect for bout a year now. never problems with the amp at least. the screw no longer even turns, and is getting blacker......

I would use 8 or 10 awg wire for power and GROUND. It is correct to have the fuse with in 18 inches of the battery. I would take it back to the shop and show them the problem.
