The headunit I want to purchase says
50W X 4 Channles Does this mean that each channle will produce 50 watts or each channle will produce 12.5 Watts?
If 12.5 Watts then in an 720 Watt 4 Channel amp, does this mean with a 4 Ohm Impedence that EACH channle will produce 60 Watts? or 15 Watts?
If 60 Watts and I purchase speakers with 50 Watt RMS does this mean I'll run the risk of blowing them? Do I need to purchase speakers within the watt range of my Headunit and Amp? and also if I use an Amp will it take 2 channles from my Headunit or just one?
I was thinking of powering the front two speakers with my headunit and the rear speakers with a 4 channle amp... What do you think?

50 W PEAK to each speakerOriginally Posted by Need4Camaro

huh? kinda confused by your ?........but your amp would take low-level inputs and amplify the signal to what it's rated at....what it is when it's broken down to 4 ch @ 4 ohms, I don't know (the specs will say......but it's not related to the HU power)Originally Posted by Need4Camaro

you run the risk if you power them ignorantly -- but you're fine with those numbers (given they are correct)Originally Posted by Need4Camaro

if u have an aftermarket HU, you most likely have pre-amp outputs that will be used for the amp....you want to avoid high-level/speaker inputs.

how many speakers? Monsoon? power the fronts with an aftermarket amp, and possibly the sails depending on what you have there -- otherwise leave sails off Monsoon amp and hatch off of HU powerOriginally Posted by Need4Camaro

50w MAX to 4 speakers......regardless of the HU, you can count on only ~18wRMS of clean powerOriginally Posted by bryan2230
50w to 4 speakers.

I see... So basically a Headunit alone is enough to power 4 speakers if the speakers are rated at 50 Watt RMS or lower with a 60 Watt Peak or Higher?Originally Posted by fredmr39

The amp takes the signal from the Head Unit and amplifies it a few watts higher? Example being this amp would amp the signal from the Headunit to 60 Watts per channle? If thats the case then wouldn't this be a rather useless amp as it's putting out almost the same power rating as the headunit?

Okay lets say I used that amp above... ... with these speakers ... The Amp outputs 60 Watts per channle, and the speakers performs 65 Watts RMS... and a maximum rating of 195 Watts... ...meaning this amp probably won't beable to hurt these speakers as its output per channle is too low... right? ... Now lets say I went with a more powerfull amp 100 Watts per channle exceeds 65 Watts RMS... will I beable to tell a difference in sound between the this amp and the first amp? Also will this Amp run the risk of blowing those speakers since it exceeds the 65 Watt RMS? or is that speaker safe until 195 Watts?Originally Posted by fredmr39

6 Speaker setup... ...2 fronts, 2 sails, and hatch speakers. Monsoon is going to be history altogether - I MIGHT keep the 2 channle amp but I'm not certain. I was going to power the 2 fronts and the HATCH speakers by the 4 channle amp and the 2 sails by the headunit itself... but willing to accept better ideas...Originally Posted by fredmr39

Would the same be for an Amp that produces 50 Watts per channle?Originally Posted by fredmr39

Also - If a speaker produces 60 Watts RMS and a Head Unit produces 50 Watts RMS by 4 channles, then wouldn't an Amp be pretty useless in a 4 speaker setup? It would only net 10 extra watts - couldn't the entire system be powered by the headunit and sound just as good? Or should I find an Amp that produces 60 watts by 4 channles at 4 ohms?
Most speakers only produce 60 Watt RMS - or am I looking at the wrong place?
If this is the case then shouldn't I just power the front speakers / backseat speakers via the Headunit and Trunk Speakers via a 2 channle Amp?

sorry didn't see your last post, I'll follow up on it in a little -- but the HU produces no more than 18or 19 watts RMS of clean power -- you are looking at peak ratings........amps will make MUCH more
