cost to run a 2nd battery and 200amp alternator?
looking at doing this as my system warrants it (orion XTRPRO 2400, PPI PC650 and PC 275). was wondering what the cost of parts and labor might be roughly.
thanks,
brian

240 is cheap and that is about as big as they can wind in a stock housing. you realize it takes about 25-35hp to run an alternator that large.

2 more questions:
1) mr alternator said 200 amps is $260 to my door, anywhere cheaper?
2)if i ran a yellow top battery only would i be ok? or should i really run 2 batterys?
thanks,
brian

I ran 2 15" MTX 5000s on an MTX2150x and another 75x4 amp, on nothing but stock wiring and a yellow top. just get a friggin yellow top, and don't be retarded, watch your volts and hit att. at stop lights. lol.

He is going to be running more power in his midsize amp than you were total... that is nothing like what you were doing.

Anyway, BT, take a look at what a buddy of mine did

any pages that show how to install a 2nd battery, as well as any tips for me to do it? its getting close to that time for me and need an install page/advice on how to do it.....i have a yellow top as my 2nd battery and i plan on ordering the summit battery relocation kit and an isolator. which bring me to my next question, who makes isolators and where can i get em?
thanks,
brian

well, based on the fact that i am running ~3000 watts rms (hehe) looks like ill need a fairly large one, as in the biggest one they make. the $75 one wont cut it apparantly...240 amp is $180 and another 20 for the GM harness....i may just pony up the money for a system regulator (~$80 more).

If you can't get an answer from here, you better find an electric engineer

thats' an awesome price for the alt. trust me...
as for the 2nd batt. do this, take your stock batt out and buy two new batts' both same size and brand. do this and you won't have to buy an isolator, i garuntee you...
in my avenger i had 1 15 on 4000 watts and another 300 watts to the highs, before i ripped everything apart i had a total of 4 battery's in there all running on the stock alternator. no isolaters no problems, front batt was a red top, 2 yellows in the back, and a duralast for some extra help.
as for 2nd batt a myth, your an idiot....
unless you are running regulated amplifiers like zapco. most are not.
lets think for a second. alt charges at 13.8-14.4 volts, when the bass hits it pulls all the juice it can, roughly 60-70 amps per 1000 watts, your alt can't produce the power for a quick bass hit fast enough so the voltage drops to 12.4-13 volts before getting into the battery. at this time the alt is doing nothing, your drawing off your battery.
so, some amps will fry or clip bad below 11.4 volts, most shut off right around there as well. in order to keep voltage as high as possible you need more battery's to try and hold the voltage.
adding more batteries is easy, run a peice of 1/0 wire (buy from www.darvex.com) to the rear battery, hood positive of front battery to the pos of trunk batt. ungrade your ground under the hood to 4 gauge or 1/0 to the body. and do the same in the trunk 4 gauge or 1/0 ground to the body. the seatbelt bolts are good spots to ground. anyway, the run wires off the back batt to your system. oh and upgrade to 4 gauge from the alternator to the battery as well.
do this and your good to go, general rule of thumb is 1 extra batt per 1000watts.
