At Ford, it's called the GEN pool (Guaranteed Employment Numbers). Once they are here, if any job opens up around the country, they pick from this pool of workers first. This is one of the things they are trying to get rid of.

They also collect unemployment when the plants shut down and the auto-manufacturer pays a portion of this as well.

Threxx's numbers are a little off, its really in the $4x range for non-union and the $7x number for UAW includes the legacy costs as well.

The problem with the Union is not so much the pay as it is the policies.

It is a pretty good read, but I don't like 2 of his "facts". He mentions that no one wants to buy American autos, yes more than half of vehicles sold were American last year.

And the $800 dollars a vehicle, if accurate adds up to billions of dollars a year in cost savings for the big 3.
