UAW Michigan locals are ready to strike GM

http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dl...2/793564613/-1

Despite GM having a National UAW contract to keep things like this from happening it seems the UAW is trying to force an end to the American Axle strike by striking GM plants.

A quote that seems to sum things up nicely:

With the economy in my home state being as sweet as it is I can certainly see the logic in testing the waters of a strike.

I would love for GM or American Axle to post a full print ad in the news and broadcast on the radio; "x-thousand line jobs have recently opened up and we are taking applications. High School/GED a request not a requirement. 3 times minimum wage with 2 weeks vacation and national holidays off. 401K and full health/dental/vision insurance offered. Must be able to read/write in English and pass a urine screen".

The line of people would make the old Catepillar strike look silly.

Totally agree, it sucks for the current UAW workers; but the market has to make an adjustment. It's gotten ridiculous.

I'd **** my pants if that happened, then took a shower real quick and lined up to apply!

Seems to me you guys didn't bother to read the article.

Its a LOCAL contract issue.

Do all you guys base your posts on what an UNAMED AUTO ANALYSTs have to say?

Thats like me saying your girlfriend/wife is an easy lay! Because I am un unamed women anaylst!

Most of you don't know that there are 2 contracts to run an auto plant, the local and the national. First you get a national agreement than a local.

By the way GM will be hiring! You need more than High School education and the starting pay will be around $13 to $14 an hour or did you experts forget already about the "Award Winning" "Money Saving" national agreement that was voted in that allows the 2 tier wage system?

The best day of my life is when I will walk out of a crap box auto factory for the last time. You all forget the old saying: "Don't judge a man until you walk a mile in his shoes." The second best day of my life is when I put my last part on a Suburban, I no longer build vehicles. It by far was the worse job I ever had; building trucks.

I will tell you that GM has been good to me in the past, but no longer, remember that we are now equal to Toyota in hours per vehicle--that means those jobs you guys think are easy and wonderful, well suck. How else do you think GM and the UAW caught up? It took them both to pull thier heads out of the sand and work together.

This last Easter we slowed down the line to build less trucks. You don't just slow it down, you reduce people and jobs, give more work to each person and lay off the rest. We just put 200 people out the door, they will be laid off until the SAP people retire in July, than they will back fill jobs.

If you hate it so much then quit. It is a pretty easy choice: either the pay and benefits are worth the crap or they aren't. If they are then quit bitching and do the job there are LOTS of people willing to take your place. If they aren't then your choice is pretty simple.

Since I am in school right now I have a side job, I work a crap job as a server at Macaroni Grill. We have to do crap work and get crappy hourly pay, deal w/ customers who expect the best of everything for the price of nothing, not to mention the idiots I have to work with. But the thing that makes the difference is the tips. If the tips go down I leave, simple as that. Because I can recognize that though my job sucks it is still a job and for the time being it works for me. When it doesn't work for me any longer then I will quit, w/ no qualms about it.

So what is GM suppose to do when the market for trucks slows down? Just keep paying these people to do nothing? If that was the case you would all be out of work real fast.

Since I am in school right now ...
Life gets a lot more complicated when there's a family to support and a roof to keep over everyones' head. If you don't understand this now, then you've probably got some additional education yet to come.

As 93indy stated, what's happening has to do with local contracts. Are there some politics involved? Of course... by both sides.

I do have more education left but it isn't related to this. He has the need to support a family that only makes his decision that much more simple. He needs to bring in X number of dollars to support his family. If the job provides that and the job isn't so terrible that he HAS to quit then he needs to stick it out. If I have learned anything in my life is that life is a series of choices. And you make your life based on YOUR choices. You can't go around blaming others for your life.

Seems to me as usual, you guys miss the point.

It aint the union bitchin' it's not me either. Let me tell you some wisdom. If the job was so great they wouldn't have to pay you at all.

My point was: This "press release from an "unkown" source" has no point. It's pure B.S. So lets all make uninformed posts!

Let me inform you experts of yet another point. Most all G.M. plants have tours for the public. If you thinks its a great job stop in an take a tour (1 CZ28 member has) you would be surprised at how few people are in the plants.

The union has to be careful, as soon as they make it worthwhile for GM to move out of country (which i'm sure would take a LOT) they prbly will. I'm sure dozens of other countries would love to have the #1/#2 automaker be based out of their country.
