Oh, must be they are building crappy cars that nobody wants, too, just like GM-

Or, is there an economic downturn and no credit available that is affecting all car manufacturers?

Saab is owned by GM...and Volvo by Ford.

I assume they are only providing bailout funds on the assumption that GM and Ford will be selling the brands off.

The Swedes should have just purchased those brands so they would have a known future.

It's a defensive move ... the same thing is happening in Canada. If Sweden, or Canada, don't come to the table with money for their domestic auto plants, they risk having them closed down as a condition of the larger bailout being put together in the US. You can see how the US government would pressure the US automakers to save jobs in US plants at the expense of foreign plants, unless there was already money tied to keeping those foreign plants running.

(except honda and toyota - you can do anything for them)

wait... if they helped SAAB, doesn't that mean that the Swedes just helped GM? Maybe they can see how helping them is a good thing?
