I am gonna run for the hills after asking this one...

But which generation is most responsible for most of the Camaro's negative stereotypes..?

You know, it's always good to learn a thing or two from informed persons.

I never quite knew the reason why GM didn't use plastic panels as an alternative to "fibreglass"... but you've essentially answered my question... after all these years.

I think this thread should turn into just postin multiple generations of Camaro's together. Some awesome pics in here. I would love to see all 5 generations together with similar paint schemes.

Looks a little forced to me. I'd rather see something completely new, yet familiar.

If I remember the article correctly, it was proposed by HOTROD (at least the author) that this could be done cheaply with front and rear fascia replacements while keeping the rest of the 3rd gen basically stock. (Although I believe they also proposed an LS1 swap.) Better looking than any 5th gen Firebird conversion IMHO. Still, the 3rd gens were one of the best looking generations of Camaros. Best leave it alone.

I'll answer generically: the old but not really old ones. When I was a kid, 3rd gens were new, and 2nd Gens were the main contributors to the negative image. Today, the second gens have either rusted away, or been restored to perfection. Third gens have taken the 2nd gens' place...though ratty early 4th gens are starting to appear with alarming regularity.

The late 2nd gens are still bad. I was in high school when the 3rd gens came out. They were cool and truly "closest thing to a Vette yet" more than the previous generation had been. My best friend at the time had a 1980 Z/28. It was the anemic 305/TH350 California version, but we still thought it was cool, especially with the cowl induction hood. We were all in to musclecars at the time, I had a 67 Chevelle Malibu, another friend had a 66 Chevelle with a 454, and another had a 70 Z/28-RS. But newer Camaros were still cool then, every kid wanted one, but most couldn't afford one. To be honest, I think the whole thing shifted when the IROC-Z was born. It gave the impression that just add some fancy stickers and scoops to an otherwise plain Z/28, and voilą! Instant IROC.

At least that's how it was here on the left-coast, back in the day.
