A sad end for EV1's....

From an anonymous contributor comes confirmation of GM's scorched-earth EV1 policies. These photos were taken in December 2003 at GM's Desert Proving Grounds in Mesa, AZ.

When they were available, it was not possible to buy one. They were for lease only. It's been suggested that a few are still in the hands of Universities. I don't know about that though. I'm sure that GM is keeping a couple in a dark closet somewhere.

Yeah, that is kinda sad to see. It wouldn't have been practical to me since the my second car is also the road trip car, but you'd think there'd be some use for them (like donated to college SAE clubs or something) rather than just crushing them all.

It was actually a pretty cool piece of engineering, and if GM did things right, they should have learned a hell of a lot of things that will allow them to take lead in the hybrid and fuel-cell markets

While I completely understand GM's reasons for crushing them, it's really sad to see. Most owners were very enthusiastic about their EV1s and would have paid a fair sum of money to buy the cars when the lease was up. Of course, GM refused.

It's a wonder more weren't "stolen" when GM demanded them back.

On a higher note....

Almost the entire car can be recycled....

98% of the Batteries
100% of Body Panels and Frame

random question: Why is every hybrid car either fugly and/or very strange?

Form follows function in this case. The coefficient of drag for EV1 was amazingly low! .19!

Typical 4th gen is around .34. I think Honda was bragging about it's hybrid with .25. Prius is .29.

*** advantage my ***!

I remember reading once that these types of cars are intentionally made to be ugly to the eye... as to keep consumer intest in them to a minimum for a plethora of reasons....

No doubt the ev1 was ugly, but not even the flagship corvette can match its alum. chassis or its .19cd (new vette is rated at .28cd)
