Thumbs up Rear Drive to return in 2005 for 2006 MY

This probally should have been posted in Z28x's thread about the SS, El Camino, & Camaro's return in 2006, but I figured I'd post it separately.

I know I posted this info before, but if I'm not mistaken, this involves a separate transmission plant, indicating a very large number of RWD cars planned to be phased into production over the 2005-2006 timeframe!

"On Thursday GM is expected to announce plans to produce an all-new six-speed automatic transmission for full-size cars and light trucks at Willow Run beginning in 2005 or 2006.

The transmission will be used in a new generation of high-performance rear-drive cars and light trucks. The transmission will probably also be used with all-wheel drive versions of those vehicles later, sources said."

If nothing else, this could be future 'shelf parts' that Camaro may be able to take advantage of...

I think I can safely break this also, Buick will in fact have a car that is based on the Cadillac STS. I don't know which one (doubt it's the Regal) but it will be out in 2005/6.

This was in the pipeline before GM started planning to produce the a version of the VE here, so it's been going for awhile.

Holden will probably use that auto (as soon as i read 'for full-size cars and light trucks ' it screams Holden) as they will be using the new HFV6 in around 05-06 and don't want to keep using the current 4 speed with it. And if it goes on the V6 it will have to go on the V8

STS is 2004 or 5, I think... soon anyway.

DTS is maybe a year or two further away, I believe...

Now, if they'd just get it through thier brains that the Monte Carlo and Impala both need to be converted to RWD/V8, we'd be fine.

6 speed automatic? Can anyone say "paddle shifters" or "manu-matic"?

AWD LS6 GTO or G8 would be nice with an A6 and paddle shifters

The joint venture between GM and Ford was for developing a 6-speed front-drive transmission, not a RWD/AWD 'box. Ford uses the ZF 6HP26 in their RWD applications that call for a 6-speed auto.

Would that be the proposed Roadmaster then?

Actually I honestly don't know.

The reason I said I doubt it's a Regal is because my understanding is that Regal was part of the Grand Prix/Impala/Monte Carlo's updated "W" body.

It could be Park Avenue's replacement, LeSabre's replacement, or a whole new line like a possible Roadmaster. I just simply know that Buick's getting essentially a rebodied STS, and that this car (like the STS) will be very close in overall size as the CTS, though it will be modestly wider & have a slightly longer wheelbase.

Though I found this out over a year ago, Buick never really interested me beyond the Grand Nationals, and I figured no one else would be that instred either. Plus at the time, 2006 seemed an eternity away.

Plus, at the time, it was early in development and I was asked not to 'spread it all over the place just yet'. But since so much time has passed, GM has announced new RWD engine & transmission plants for full sized cars, and Lutz himself has said that Buick will be filling in Cadillac's old market as it goes upscale, I'm assuming the coast is clear now.
