I just find the idea of a 500hp Mustang crazy. Seems like someone at Ford seriously thinks the Mustang is a natural competitor to the Corvette.
Not to mention the price it would cost. I think it should stay closer to its roots and lower price that it has tradionaly been. The aftermarket will always cater to the extreme horsepower junkies.

Uh... the last Cobra was more than enough to handle the C5. So someone thought correctly that Cobra vs Vette is the match up.
If they want to take 2 steps backward it's their choice, but they'll lose a lot of loyal Cobra owners.

I said "I will believe it when I see it", and it appears I am not seeing it.

Hah ha. Do I smell relief? Little worried about the vette getting beat 2 generations in a row?

. They were making close to 400 with N/A 5.4's in Cobra R's and Falcon GT's, and that is with a relatively tame 9.60:1 compression ratio. What does that new 5.0 Dohc (stroker 4.6) crate motor put out? 420-450hp? With higher compression, a good tune, and the right parts, the 5.4 is capable of 450hp i think.
I think the next Cobra will have 420-430hp (underrated i hope) minimum.

I'd call it a driver's race in a straight line and a whoopin on the Cobra everywhere else. Worried about the vette getting beat 2 generations in a row...laughable.
Re: Possible '07 Cobra engine news....
Here we go with the Cobra vs Corvette thingy again.
Facts are:
1. Cobra puts more power to the wheels than the Z06 by about 15 horses. Cobra engine's more powerful than the Z06, and alot more powerful than the base C5 Corvette. Doesn't matter if it's supercharged, turbocharged, gor under a magic spell.
2. Cobras match Z06s in 0-60 runs, but Z06s pull marginally ahead by the quarter.... by about than half a second. Standard C5 Corvette's not even part of this the program.
3. The Cobra seats 4 people to Z06's 2.
4. Cobra costs $15,000 less than a Z06 (and 10 grand less than a regular C5 Corvette).
5. A Z06 will beat a Cobra around the track, because it's lighter and purpose built.
7. There currently isn't another 4 passenger car that can keep up with the Cobra.
8. People PLAN to buy a car like the Corvette or Cobra. There's no cross shopping between the 2.
Lessons:
* Cobra won't be embaressed running with a Z06 (let alone a regular C5 Corvette) despite being a 4 passenger car with it's structural roots dating back to the 70s and being about 500# heavier.
* SVT did a phenominal job with the Cobra, creating a car like that which can run with Z06s, and outrun C5s.
* The Corvette customer is not the same as a Cobra customer. Cobra buyers are Mustang Fans who are older, have a bit more money, and want something special. Corvette buyers come from other brands as well as Chevrolet.
Cobra is a 4 passenger coupe that has the muscle & handling to challenge top and outrun base level Corvettes. However, neither car is a competitor to the other.

I don't know what "marginally" is in your book, but .5 in the quarter is a hell of a lot of real estate. You're looking at 5+ cars. That's an *** whoopin where I come from
Not only that, but it is getting uglier by the milisecond when the Z06 is 5+ mph faster going through the traps

Sure we'll call it a drivers race between the old ones.

A screwcharger 5.4 Cobra would be just toying with the LS2 C6. Figure low 12s easy.

The Z06 with comparable power absolutely kills the Cobra on a road course and runs even with it on the 1/4 mile track. The fact that the vette weighs ~400-500 lbs. less than the Cobra, and rides on a chassis designed in the 90's as opposed to the 70's, makes it clearly the better car.

When you get down to 100 mph or less in the quarter, 0.5 seconds begins to look dead even.
It's all relative to speed.
When you have to start refering to milliseconds, you are splitting hairs. I can take a dump in the bathroom before a race, let alone add a pound or so pressure in the tires and gain a milisecond in the quarter. Milliseconds means dead even in my book: you may win this time, I may win next time.
The Z06 is consistantly quicker in the quarter, but it most certainly doesn't "whoop" the Cobra's a** . By saying that, you'll also have to admit the Cobra "whoops" the regular Corvette's a** since Cobra's half a second quicker in the quarter (at $10,000 less while carrying 4 people), right?

Have any of you even raced an '03/'04 Cobra against a 'Vette...base C5 or Z06?
I have...and it's a driver's race against a Z06. Like it or not. In fact, it's a driver's race against anything. But Cobra is close enough to Z06 to make it a driver's race, and a base C5 is close enough to Cobra to make it a driver's race.
I've had encounters with three Z06's. One was two 2-3 gear pulls. I was edging him out on both. Another was a run from a light on my way home from work. I don't "stoplight race" and most of my runs on the street aren't in the Cobra and happen on dark, desolate, uninhabited roads late at night, but this was too good to pass up. It was a blue Z06, with the hood graphic...I think it's some special edition car. The car has a catback and Vari-ram. I know this because as it happens, I know guys who know him. From a light, into 3rd gear, I put him at my bumper and he was staying there. In a bone stock '03 Cobra. I saw him on the street that night on the way to one of the local spots and told him to meet me there for a run...he never showed. The third was a black '02-'04 at Atco. This was the night I went 12.6. The Z06 owner's brother-in-law was running a pullied '03 Cobra, and he came up to ask me what I had done to the car after seeing a pass of mine. The Z06 was running 12.9-13.0's@110-111mph. I watched a pass before I left, and he was hitting it hard on the 1-2 and 2-3.
Most Z06's don't run 115-117mph. Most run 110-114mph, making it close enough to be a driver's race with an '03/'04 Cobra.
guionM hit the nail on the head. Z06 (and Corvette) is a purpose built, 2-seater, sports car costing much more than Cobra.

Re: Possible '07 Cobra engine news....
didn't some car mag run a test between a base c5 vert and a cobra vert (maybe a vert, don't recall) and the c5 edged the cobra out?
granted this is just a mag comparo but, i'd just like to add that flame to the fire
