Question Onstar on the 5th gen?

Do you guys think we should have this option to be one up on the competition?
Or should it be left off to keep prices down?

From what I know at this point, OnStar probably won't be available on a 5th gen.

I'd be shocked if it was not offered.

OnStar is being rolled out pretty much across the full GM line now.. in fact, I think Cavalier and Sunfire will be offering it for 03 (Not 100% on that, but pretty sure)

There are so many advantages to OnStar:

1) Lockout Protection.
2) Track a car thief.
3) Help you get 'unlost'.
4) Medical help is a button away.
5) OnStar will call 911 automatically when your airbags are deployed.
6) Helps you find restaurants and gas while traveling.

Of course, depending on the level of service you get...

The only bad thing is that you have that whole 'Big Brother is watching' thing...

You: Not your problem BIatch.
Os: Dont make me think you going to drag race, I will void your GM Warranty!
You: Try Me.

Common sense reveals that it would be available.

I wouldn't want it.

GM just needs to leave all the Telemantics ( Onstar ) and anything else that operates itself like auto headlights , passive this and that out of the new Camaro

I dont mind if its availible, but if its standard, heads shall roll.

Thats another thing a 5th gen would need. Options besides V6/V8/CD Changer...

Bingo! The idea seems quite good, but there is a problem with surveilance. And you guys / gals know better in the states with patriot act recently passed.

Anyone with rights to access such data will be able to map your driving patterns, routes you take, shopping malls you go to, and hence another giant step in marketing.

Almost everything now that is used to record any personal information is sold / disclosed to various parties. How many times have we seen this? Or worse yet, how many times users were able to find out the truth only years later, after the crime had been committed? By the crime I mean that personal data was shared without user's knowledge and his or her agreement.

Not to mention that they would simply void the warranty should they find out you've been to the drag strip. Or they could calculate your speed and present evidence in court, should you attempt to battle a ticket in court.

Don't forget, OnStar can listen to your conversations in the car. In a limited way, they can control your car remotely. Now, how good is that?

It's like Kazaa and Brilliant Digital. Infiltrate as many users as possible. Then at some convenient time hit the switch and gather data. It's like where Microsoft and their Windows XP is now. You can't change any hardware without their approval first.

Call me paranoid, but I like my privacy without any chance of someone tapping into my car to listen to my phone conversation or to map my location... I also hate marketers and their sneaky ways to annoy you in as many ways as possible.

Don't want it unless they reduce the monthly fees by 90%.

What I do want is the turn signal to cancel at a much larger radius input ... seems to me they don't tighten it up in relation to the steering ratio.

One side note on the "Big Brother" Issue...

GM has been putting "Black Boxes" in the Camaro/Firebird and Corvette for years now.

These black boxes record & store information on what the car was doing in the event of a collision.

SO... it's not like we are totally unmonitored as it is....

OK....wait! Are you being serious? My crazy government teacher (who no one ever took seriously) said something about that, and I just laughed at him. Do we really have black boxes in our cars? And if so, where are they located because mines coming out or being destroyed.

Ya, seriosuly they are there... I *THINK* they started in 1998 with the LS1, but I am not 100% on that.

From what I understand, it is located under the drivers seat somewhere. Don't knwo how integrated it is into the car's computer system, so I don't know how easily it can be hacked out of there.

It monitors things such as Percentage of Throttle, braking, engine speed, vehicle speed... all that good crap.
