http://www.indycamaro.com/images/DreamCruise_Z28.jpg Good morning, all, For those of you attending the Woodward Dream Cruise, be looking for one of our newest project cars......and, for those of you attending the Fcar Gathering at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, we're hoping to have both the Camaro and Firebird project cars on display...... Vehicles provide a sneak peak at the division's capabilities. WARREN ? GM's new Performance Division will unveil two partnership show vehicles at the 2002 Woodward Dream Cruise that symbolize the heritage of the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 and Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. Created solely for show purposes, the entire project was completed in just eight weeks with parts donated by GM Powertrain, GM Performance Parts, and GM Design Center. "This venture truly epitomizes the wonderful relationship that will continue to flourish as a symbol of GM divisional cooperation on future projects and will serve as a great send off for the exciting 35-year heritage of both the Camaro and Firebird," said Mark Reuss, GM's Executive Director for Performance Division. "We wanted to start building employee enthusiasm with our division partners and I think these were two perfect cars to help achieve that goal." The GM Performance Division 2003 Z/28 emulates the 1960s and 70s Penske-Sonoco stock TransAm race team vehicles. Complete with a classic high dome cowl induction hood, egg crate grill, aggressive front fascia, and a rear spoiler. The dark metallic blue exterior and yellow graphics make for a visually striking appearance and the 427 c.i., C5R, aluminum, race motor pumps out 600 horsepower. It is mated with a six-speed manual transmission. The fenders are modified to accommodate the 315/30/18 tires in the front and 335/30/18s in the rear. The interior has the look and feel of a race car where the midnight black upholstery contrasts a bright yellow, full roll cage. The bucket seats are equipped with a five-point harness and the instrument cluster has oversized racing gauges and carbon fiber throughout. The GM Performance Division 2003 TransAm is reminiscent of the 1970-71 original production Pontiac Firebird TransAm. This vehicle is a modern interpretation of the classic, with a white exterior accented with blue racing stripes and classic shaker hood. The front and rear spoilers were modified to mimic the original muscle car along with front and rear wheel aero spats. The interior appointments come complete with all the amenities of the original and include a Hurst shifter, perforated heliocone blue leather seats and a DNA white perforated leather headliner. The steering wheel is also leather wrapped in blue to match. The 427 c.i. powerplant, matched with an automatic transmission, supplies 455 horses to the 285/30/ZR20 inch rear tires. The front wheels are fitted with 265/30/19 high performance tires. [This message has been edited by Doug Harden, Pres CICC (edited August 15, 2002).] |

The Camaro is so damned beautiful it makes me want to cry when I think of what we could have had with an F5...
Oh my, what could have been.... |

Did anybody else notice that the picture appears to be a true coupe, not a hatch back? I wonder if the real thing will be that way as well, or maybe I'm just seeing things?

Wow. I like it a lot!
|
Wonder if it's one of those aftermarket notchback assemblies.

Very nice! Love ditching the hatchback and side exhaust (wheels are great, too!). I wonder if GM will offer any of this look as a kit from the parts dept like they did with the Grand Am SC/T.
When is the F-body gathering at the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green? I'd love to see this ~2003~ Camaro and the TA in person. ------------------ -JERRY- '02 Impreza WRX '88 Fiero Formula Formerly owned: '93 Firebird Formula |
Oh yeah, and if GM had offered this freshened up 4th gen as a production '03 model (obviously not as race-ready and with higher output LS1/6), it would have certainly had my interest. I bet this project didn't even cost an arm and a leg.
