Re: mazda to recall the RX8 2004 - 2006
Is there another engine, non-rotary, that Mazda could put into the RX8? Maybe the Mazda 6's V6 or another engine in the Mazda lineup?

Absolutely. Give it up Mazda! The rotary has been a big problem since it's conception. Great idea, but way to difficult to pull off. Put a turbo 4 or 6 cyl in there instead and actually give it some TQ. Man, that's a lot of stuff that needs replacing after only 2-3 years. The whole engine, starter and battery. That sucks. I actually don't mind the look of them, but they don't have the powertrain to back up the looks IMO. Dan |

My guess is that this will be the last straw for Mazda and the 'ole Wankle. That engine is just a POS gimmick that is too costly, doesn't put out enough power, and no one can work on them. Enough is enough Mazda, no more rotary engine.

Rotary engines are good in theory, light weight, compact, high ouput/displacment . But fail in practice. I have a friend that used to have an '86 RX-7 Turbo. Very fun car to drive! But drink oil like I drink beer.

Re: mazda to recall the RX8 2004 - 2006
It's like one of those things where guys who take the time to get them working properly say "hey, hey, check this out! Look, it works, it works!! Hey check it out!!:metal: " ... and then just when they've got it working and you get there to check it out, it breaks again!! :D
Now, you could say the same for top fuel cars ... they build a motor, run it a couple times, and have to rebuild it again!!:D BUT, at least when they're built, they're RECORD SETTING ENGINES!!! When have rotary engines ever done anything so spectacular that people keep going back to them? |

What I think is funny is that the Renesis motor was named "motor of the year" when it came out. Nothing says "motor of the year" like having to be recalled. :D |
Re: mazda to recall the RX8 2004 - 2006
Can you imagine the reaction if that was a General Motors car?

Re: mazda to recall the RX8 2004 - 2006
Okay, let's consider the facts...
1) A German invented the rotary engine. 2) No German car companies offer a rotary engine. Coincidence? Unlikely... Plus, if I'm in a car getting v8 fuel economy, I'd just as soon have the v8 to show for it... |
