No car in GM's lineup (except maybe Caddy) will be allowed to build a car faster than a Vette, and even the V isn't faster than a base C5.
GM put the same motor in the TTA!

After that, it got killed because the 3.8 V6 plant in Flint was being converted to build FWD 3800's. Pontiac switches back to the small block in 1990 and the RWD 3.8 becomes a fond memory. They ran the motor as long as they could but had to convert the Flint facility over to the FWD engines.

There wasn't any damned conspiracy about it, the platform died and then the engine died.

Besides, there was no danger whatsoever of a TTA or GN or GNX running with a 1989/1990 ZR-1 without lots of mods, so Corvette regained it's top spot and has stayed there since.

PS - One more thingy... the true death knell for the turbo 3.8 was the fact that the turbo lowered exhaust gas temperatures and the motor couldn't light off the cats quickly enough to pass emissions.

I've stayed out of this, because my recent purcahse is gonna make me look biased, but without saying anything subjective...

As far as off-the-line acceleration goes, the LS1 GTO 0-60 is 5.3 seconds with a 6 speed and 5.4 seconds with an auto. That is right in line with 2002 F-Bodies.

The LS2 GTO, according to Pontiac itself, will do 0-60 is 4.6 seconds... with the auto, and 4.8 with the manual (the trannies flip-flopped with the new motor)

That 4.6 or even 4.8 0-60 is gonna squash a stock 2002 F-Body.... at least to 60 MPH.

Of course the point of advertising is to sell but you're right, I'm sure Pontiac doesn't view GTO as being special at all.

They couldn't sell the Firebird either...so where were the ads??? And why didn't they just rate Trans Ams at 350 HP with the Corvette? Why not? Wouldn't that follow your logic? Buy a clue. If anything the F-body proved that you can't just throw more horsepower at a car to get it to sell. You don't think GM learned their lesson there? They're obviously giving the car a full 400 horse LS2 for some other reason...maybe because Pontiac plans to actually support GTO.
