J Mays spills some Mustang info...and, taunts Lutz.

"Approaching the new Mustang at the recent Detroit auto show, Mays explains the retention of the solid rear axle. “It's a volume car,” he says. “We'll do 180,000 in the first year, so it needs to be cheap. Besides, you'll soon see a cracking roll-out of limited editions: the Mach One, Bullitt (and) Boss Cobra.”

As he passes Ford's grouping of its power trilogy cars — the Mustang, GT and Cobra, Mays quips: “I wanted Bob (Lutz, Chrysler Group's product guru) to walk past our stand every morning and be reminded that we're America's performance brand.”"

They're America's performance brand? News to me.

Come on GM. How much longer do with have to listen to this nonsense?

I actually think this is a good thing. Let Bob Lutz get bitched around for a bit, and then see what kind of response GM will have....Bob Lutz doesnt seem like the type of guy to just blow something like that off.

"Thank you sir, may I have another?"

Honestly, Bob Lutz seems like a cool guy, let's hope he can work some magic in the next few years. I'd love to see the gloves come off when GM dives into the horsepower war.

another ward's piece mentions a $60,000 Mustang Cobra R for the future...it had better be packing some serious power, handling, and weight reduction to challenge a cheaper corvette

Maybe Lutz would walk past the ford display everyday and be reminded that Ford is so **** poor at styling cars that they resort to using 35 year old designs.

I'm surprised no one has commented on what J Mays said on the Mustang. 180,000 units first year. Even Phil Martens has never publicly gone over 170,000.

Confirmation of the Mach 1...( which is no huge surprise), Bullitt, (which is a small surprise), ......and what's this?......Boss Cobra? Wonder if he meant Boss and Cobra.

And about Bob Lutz (I think they meant to say GM and not Chrysler product guru)......

I think he's doing a great job redirecting GM. But until I'm driving my completely, kick-***, 5th gen CAMARO Z/28......he won't be my product guru .

Good ole' Mays. Shouldn't he be looking through design history books and plan for his next rip-off.

Wow, a lot of angry responses from the GM folks on here. No doubt because GM has disappointed all of us by not stepping up to the challenge. Ford appears to be doing EVERYTHING its Mustang fans want, and doing it right. I'm beginning to get the feeling the anti-retro crowd isn't pissed at the design of the car, but just pissed that the Mustang is still around and Camaro isn't. Flame me if you like, but you know it's true.

In the next 4 or 5 years you're going to see:

1) V-6 (coupe/convertible)
2) GT (couple/convertible)
3) Mach1
4) Boss (Cobra Jet perhaps)
5) GT350
6) GT500
7) Cobra R (At $60,000 this is going to be one bad *** Mustang )

And none of these cars will have four doors like the Charger either. Bob and the rest of GM better get their **** in gear if they want to compete. Whether you like it or not, Ford has the performance crown. The challenged has been issued. The question is, will GM answer the call?

Like I've said before, don't be surprised if a 5.4L (or similarly sized) 3V VCT motor shows up in one of those special edition Mustangs

On top of that Mays goes on to say this:

Which brings the discussion to the Shelby Cobra. “This is the voluptuous one,” Mays says of the Detroit show car. “I didn't want people saying, ‘Gee, Mays you've done another retro design.’ So we threw the old English sports car away, there wasn't a lot we could work with, and tried to establish the essence of its form language.

“This is Shelby-Cobra-meets-Audi TT. It's incredibly difficult to do something this simple. It's a forward-looking, linear shape with slot-car proportions.”

From the firewall to behind the seats, the important hardware is virtually identical to the Ford GT supercar, and the car uses the same suspension, which accounts for the vast width, Mays says. “It needs to be wide, the width of a (Dodge) Viper. It's wide but short. It's 15 ins. (38 cm) shorter than a TT and weighs less than 3,100 lbs. (1,406 kg).

“I want to build it. It's totally feasible,” Mays says. “In 2˝ years, there's a factory in Troy (MI) that's going to be empty (when production of the GT stops), and I'd like to fill it up with something. This is incredibly relevant to Ford. What is the relevance of the ME Four-Twelve (Chrysler's mid-engine show stealer)? It's off-brand to me.”

No flames from me. I see taunting as a good motivational tool...in this case.
