IROC...then and now
IROC...then and now
The brand IROC is something that I am not really all that familiar with. I was told that IROC is a brand that GM won in a circuit then lost it to Dodge which then had used it on their product line. Can anyone fill in the gaps of my knowledge here?
IROC is a race series (International Race of Champions). The first year or two , Porsches were used, then the series switched to Camaros. In 1990, Chevy discontinued sponsoship and Dodge picked it up. Firebirds were being used the last time I checked.
It's a series where all participants drive identical cars-- there's even a draw beforehand to see who gets which car. The drivers can come from any series (NASCAR, IRL, etc.) and the idea is to see who's the best driver on a level playing field.
The series looks for a sponsor to provide the cars, and as noted above, Camaros were that car for a few years, then Dodge.

Yep, Firebirds are still being used even though they're not in production anymore. The complete 2003 IROC season will use Firebirds. Pontiac still has the rights to IROC after 2003, and I heard somewhere that they will use GTOs starting in 2004.

I doubt we'll see an IROC GTO. In the years the Trans Am was the IROC car, there was no IROC T/A. I think GM is done using that name on cars since the IROC-Z Camaros of the 80's used it. Just my opinion.
