This article really shows how GM's hands are tied with union contracts. Wagoneer may use the reserves of cash to try and ride it out until the contracts are up for re-negotiation in 2007.
In reality GM needs to make cuts now while restructuring, and not wait, but then they would get creamed by having to pay the workforce still if they close plants.
Wagoneer is hoping (I am guessing) that the new truck lineup will be enough to skate them through to 2007 along wth cash reserves, then renegotiate contracts to downsize and re-structure.. Just a thought.
