Intresting quote
"Bring on the Mustang Cobras, the Chrysler Hemis, the popular priced BMWs and even the Motor Trend Car of the Year Infinity G35! There ain't nothing within $20,000 of this car that's going to match its performance."
Its a Grand Prix/Am though I tell you!!
I wanna say too that I had to laugh at the dude saying that the power took him away from the car not having hood scoops and dual side exhaust. I don't care if it had 450HP, when I got out and looked at the car again or looked at the hood from inside I would still be pissed. It should still have that stuff as every other GTO had and there are no excuses for the car that will be going into production in a few months to not have them when there is plenty of time. They seem so focused on trying to make this makeshift GTO a real GTO and then leave out 2 of the most important things that actually did make the original GTO's what they were. They should really make an impression and get it right the 1st year, no waiting. Some1 posted a picture of a GTO with scoops and 1 with dual outlets and it was MUCH better. Interior-wise about the only thing I dislike alot is the steering wheel.

Boo Hoo.
Even after all this time, I cannot understand how people can get so worked up over a couple of holes in the hood, and an external guage.
How about GM just cut some holes in the Alero's hood, and mount the tacho outside, and badge it a GTO? I'm sure that would cure all the problems everyone has with the car. Cause if the Monaro wasn't available, that's probably what you'd have got ...

A few weeks ago, there was a section on the GTO on a car show on TV. One of the people responsible for the original (don't think it was Wagners) pointed out that the GTO scoops were entirely for looks, and really had no benefits whatsoever. He pointed out that they were in the worse possible place on the hood, near the center, completely away from the high pressure areas at the leading edge of the hood and the base of the windshield.
In actuality, the only GTO hood scoop that was placed where it would actually do some good was in the final year: the rear facing "Trans Am" scoop on the '74.

Well, my dealer literature states 340hp (flywheel rated obviously)...so I'd say the car should be good for, oh, 335 rear wheel

Um, I really don't know where to begin...
I love the interior of the car. The seat back looks a foot thick!
Despite the GA/GP nose, the car still looks good, even sitting still. I personally would have preferred that they left the original Monaro nose on the car as opposed to the "oval nostrils" of corporate Pontiac styling (or was that BMW's clique?), and called it the Monaro to boot. All in all, I'd love to drive one, no doubt about it.
Now back to reality...
I respect Wanger's position as much as anybody. The guy knows his stuff. But I think some of the comments he made were during moments of great enthusiasm, and are really not very palletable. Like the opening comment of this thread -
Oh really?
Please.
Nothing within $20,000 huh?!?! And to launch (yet another) assault on the Cobra to boot?
If nobody else wants to call this quote a blunder, let me be the first - it's WISHFUL DREAMING. With numerous sub-13's already abound, and oodles of actual dyno tests showing 390hp and more at the rear wheels, I hardly think the new GTO is going to "blow-away" any Cobra on the street or the track. And last I heard, the Cobra was already selling for $35k, and we have yet to see what the dealers let a GTO go for. I'm not overly impressed with the new Hemi's yet, and I am not going to defend imports. But I'd also throw out some credit to the late F-cars, because if anyone wants to put the new cam and other token improvements in their 2002 T/A or Z/28's LS1, I think they'd be within skin-thickness of the new GTO in the 1/4 too - and for LE$$, not $20K MORE.
Let's read EXACTLY what is said there. Look at these words...
Based on years of experience - meaning his educated GUESS
Wangers felt that - meaning he DID NOT actually do it
with a practiced foot and a stickier tire - again, not executed, but speculating
could run - meaning "is possible", but not yet executed
is capable - again, not done, but might happen
For those of you who might have just skimmed the article, all the guy did was hit 100mph a few times on a long straight. NOBODY did a 12.95 @ 107, and NOBODY did a 5.2 0-60. The figures are purely speculative on his part.
On behalf of all you current LS1 drivers, I think you ALREADY own a car that performs "at that level" and likely got your cars for LESS than the GTO will fetch, much less $20K more. As for attacking the Cobra... he better do so DAMN carefully. At an equal price (estimated), we know what the Cobras can do already, and with 390rwhp and less than 100 lbs difference - I don't think there's much else to say.
The GTO is an incredibly refined car capable of great performance, and Holden deserves all the credit for making such a beast.
KUDOS
to them for doing so.
I agree that it will handly eradicate the G35, BMW 3 and 5-series, and most Mercedes CLK-type cars (AMGs excepted due to cost). I'm actually glad to see it too. But I think I'd have been more reserved about whacking on the upcoming Hemi-cars, and especially the Cobra. (How many times have I said now that the Cobra is the most critiqued, most abashed car of the last decade? It's everybody's "comp-target" from Porsches to Vettes to even Vipers for Pete's sake.) And with us already knowing there's a 500hp version Cobra looming... somebody sure better get those slicks Wangers was eluding to on the car before 2005.
Great car. Great guy. Great passion. All good things.
This new GTO all alone in performance at $35k... Methinks NOT.

Based on his years of testing and being behind the wheel of much muscle, Wangers felt that with a practiced foot and a stickier tire the car he drove could run a 0-60 MPH in the low 5 seconds range and is capable of dipping into the high 12s at maybe 107 MPH. And with slicks?
