Grand National, GNX and T-Type Are Returning to Buick
Not that we didn't see this coming. Now what about a Chevrolet on alpha. :D
Grand National, GNX and T-Type Are Returning to Buick By Scott Oldham, Editor in Chief | Published Nov 26, 2012 Just the Facts: •Buick is planning to reintroduce the Grand National, T-Type and GNX nameplates. •The new models will ride on GM's rear-wheel-drive Alpha platform introduced in the Cadillac ATS sedan. •The Grand National and T-Type models will likely use turbocharged V6s, while the GNX will most likely get GM's new LT1 V8. SANTA MONICA, California — Buick is bringing back the Grand National, the GNX and the T-Type, three legendary performance nameplates from the brand's high times of the 1980s. All three cars will be sedans and they'll use GM's new rear-wheel-drive Alpha platform first introduced in the Cadillac ATS sedan. That's the plan anyway, according to a reliable source who spoke to Edmunds. more |

Re: Grand National, GNX and T-Type Are Returning to Buick
Buick definitely needs a halo-car, and an ATS coupe with a twin-turbo V6 or the new LT1 V8 would do the trick. I'm not so sure I agree that the Buick would need to have less hp (performance) than the Cadillac ATS-v. For instance, look at the LSA in the Camaro ZL1 vs. in the Cadillac CTS-v. I actually think they should make the T-Type a 4-door sedan and only offer the 2-door coupe in Grand National and GNX trim, but I guess that remains to be seen.
This only leaves us with what to name the corresponding Chevrolet alpha sedan. Assuming Camaro moves to alpha + for MY2015, why not call the 4-door alpha Monte Carlo? (Sure the original Monte only had 2-doors, but then so did the Buick T-Type.) Something to think about. |

no coupe = no sale for me

Re: Grand National, GNX and T-Type Are Returning to Buick
Agreed...although, I am considering selling my Wrangler and my Z28 to buy a new leftover 300 S Hemi...first 4 door car I've ever considered buying.
But the 300 is friggen addictive to drive. Great interior, subdued style, and one angry mother under the hood. In a world where GM announces a 4 cylinder Impala, Chrysler still throws a V8 in the same size car :D Sorry to hijack...I actually came over here for the first time in months to read up on the T-Type/GN/GNX rumors circulating the web. Glad to see it...with GM reminding me of an American Toyota these days, something like this could definitely bring some serious excitement... |
Re: Grand National, GNX and T-Type Are Returning to Buick
When I had a ATS for a few days last month when the G8 was in for service. I thought, Cadillac should get a family of ATS vehicles, especially a coupe and convertible or a hardtop convertible. I think Cadillac really needs a open top vehicle.
And Jason, go get you a G8 and you will forget all about the 300 ;). Surely there is still some Pontiac blood in you? |

Interesting ad, I didn't know the big Riviera had a T-Type model before the chopped down models came out in the mid-80s. |
Re: Grand National, GNX and T-Type Are Returning to Buick
 what about the WE4 Turbo-T?
Jk, jk. This actually is fantastic news if true. |

My father was a Buick salesman all through the T-Type years and I have a lot of fond memories of the demos he brought home of these cars. |

I thought about a G8...but good ones are hard for me to find at the auction. Plus, being a Chrysler dealer GSM, I think I need ONE Mopar in the stable now that I sold my Ram and bought a used DMax off a trade  As for the Buick T-type thing, one of the coolest (but most beat) trades I ever took in was a Buick Century Grand National. I think it was an 86. Yes, they made one  |
Re: Grand National, GNX and T-Type Are Returning to Buick
I think you're thinking of the Century Gran Sport, Jason. They were trimmed out very similarly to a Grand National and were made in '86 only.
http://gomotors.net/pics/Buick/buick...n-sport-01.jpg There was also LeSabre Grand National in '86. They are very rare. Only 117 made. http://www.beforeblack.net/images/86lgn.jpg |
Re: Grand National, GNX and T-Type Are Returning to Buick
The current Regal GS really needs the 2.8 Turbo V6 that is in the Opel/Vauxhall versions in Europe. Maybe they are saving that engine for a GN, or GNX version for the current Regal? But Regal sales have been taking a hit ever since the Verano hit showrooms, so I don't know if Regal sales could support an additional trim level.
