GM and navigation

Does any other brands other than a few Cadillac models have Navigation as an option? In my opinion GM needs this much more widely available in cars like the new Impala, Buick Lacrosse etc.

Re: GM and navigation

I agree. I also think they need significant improvement to their nav systems. In all the cars I've seen it in so far it just doesn't has as intuitive as a feel as some other brands (although there are certainly some that are worse), and most of the interiors they place it in, it look kind of like it came from Circuit City... not the factory. In other words, it doesn't look cleanly integrated into the dash. Just looks like a box that was bolted on in place of the radio.

They have one that is now trickling down to the W-Cars...you can get one in the Grand Prix that is very slick...even shows directions in the GUD

Re: GM and navigation

Just another useless gimmic IMO. GM still needs to offer it in their lower line cars because other manufactors are starting to though.

Re: GM and navigation

I could care less if any GM cars had it.

I would never buy it and it and I hope it's never part of the assembly line of a car I would want - because I don't want to have to pay more for it's existance, even if I don't order it.

Re: GM and navigation

I definitely would not buy one at $1000 as an option.

I bought a $300 portable Navman ICN510 at Fry's and has been happy with that. My wife does a lot of travel interstate and she takes that with her. We set the GPS up the night before her flight, she gets into a rental, stick the GPS up on the windscreen, and within a minute she's ready to track her way to her destination. No way will I pay much more to have a GPS fixed to a vehicle...I would if it came free.

I think a good salesperson could show off the advantages of onstar over a screen based Nav System. You don't have to look at a screen. You have someone telling you which way to turn, etc. GM just needs to show off more of the benefits of Onstar.

Re: GM and navigation

I think I would enjoy a navigation setup, but the option is just too much money right now, IMO.

Hopefulyl in a few years, the trickle down effect will lower cost.

Re: GM and navigation

No offense to the people who do not want one, ( I did not either until I did get a car with one which is sweet!!!)but this is what the public wants. Many manufacturers are offering them in many of their products. GM seems to be lagging with the navigation. It would go far with GM's image of building high tech cars and GM needs an image update overall on their products. I think navigation as an option on more cars could help make people look at GM differently and more positively as crazy as that may sound.

Re: GM and navigation

Its more of a luxury car option still, and its very rare that you see them on most main-stream models. Yes, offering it would be nice, but I guess GM has bigger fish to fry, not to mention On Star is available in just about every single car they make. DVD navi wont help you out when you lock your keys in the car, or get into an accident.

I will agree that adding the option will give people the idea that the car is high-end. I rack it up next to things like V6's in the Honda Accord and Camry. Yes, they offer them, but 90% of them are 4cyl, near stripper models.

As for what other cars have it, I know the Luceren has an option, All Caddys, and the GP. It would be nice for the rest of the W bodies, especialy for the LaCrosse, to get the option.
Put DVD navi next to HID's and OHC on the high-tech factor of cars.

Re: GM and navigation

I don't like alot of useless gizmos either. But the navigation system is FAR from useless.

I saw one in a new Honda Accord and it was awesome!

It is far much better then the Alpine Nav system I have in my 2000 Venture (Company vehicle - Aftermarket installed).

You can just say "Find Nearest Restaurant" and it will find it and tell you where to go. Ditto with "Gas Station" etc... I do alot of traveling on the road so I guess maybe your average person may not find it appealing for the money, but I think most people do some sort of traveling and would love to throw the map away.

I have not seen the GM units so I can not comment on them or compare.

The newer ones coming out will even do particular brands of gas vs others, or with restaraunts they will sort based on your preference of price range, type of food (mexican, chinese, burgers, pizza, bar, whatever), and possibly even ratings (4 stars, 1 star, bad health rating, good health rating, etc).

Re: GM and navigation

It should at least be avalible as an option in just about all cars, even the Cobalt. A lot of people would like it but don't want to have to buy a land bardge Car or SUV to get it.

Re: GM and navigation

Seems like I remeber NAV being optional on the Vibe of all cars. I check Pontiac's web site, but NAV wasn't an option listed. Was NAV dropped from the option list, or do I need to get off the crack pipe?
