GM/Chrysler new Two-Mode Hybrid

Stole it off Allpar.com. I guess Toyota is no longer class leading in hybrid technology?

"2008 Dodge Durango - The first DaimlerChrysler Two-Mode Hybrid"

"DaimlerChrysler/General Motors two-mode full hybrid system features patented technology that leapfrogs today's hybrid systems."

"Under hard acceleration the two-mode system routes power from both the engine and electric motors to the wheels for high performance." (check out the squealing tires simulation at 2:12 into the video)

Here's a link to a Windows Media Video file showing animations of how the system works:

I am having trouble following how this is that much different than current hybrid systems.

Re: GM/Chrysler new Two-Mode Hybrid

well if its the same hybrid technology the Lutz talked about like a month ago, then this is what it is: they are putting the electric motors inside the transmission so the electric motors will also have different speeds (using one tranny altogether). Where as toyota/honda systems' only have one speed. This will lead to even more mileage

It uses 2 electric motors to provide propulsion and regenerative braking for the car. Effectively: ICE connected to tranny->EM1 within tranny->gearset->EM2 within tranny->output shaft.

Basically it is like the GM hybrid now except that now the electric motor now power's the vehicle at low speeds AND a second motor is connected allowing for increased power probably at multiplicitive levels because of how they are joined, thus the 25% increase in fuel mileage.

BTW 20 mpg outta the 5.3 DOD 4 speed auto Tahoe would be about 22-23 mpg outta the 5.3 DOD 6 speed auto AND add in 25% better mileage with the hybrid system and you get pretty close to 28-29 mpg in a fullsize SUV!

Consider what this could do for a RWD car with the same setup!!!

That is a pretty impressive system. What cars are slated to use it first, besides the 2008 Dodge Durango? I wonder who will be the first automaker to install this kind of a system on a pony car?

Will this be available in the 900's right away?

I know Allison's is involved in a Transmission/Hybrid all in one design. And I think it was for the 1000 series...

6 speed with Hybrid Technology in a 3/4 Ton truck with Duramax? That would be awesome!

Last I heard, understood, read, it would be about a year after the debut of the GMT-900 SUV's when the two mode Hybrid system would be available.

The 2008 Tahoe/Suburban and possibly Silverado should have the 2 mode hybrid system optional.

Thumbs up Re: GM/Chrysler new Two-Mode Hybrid

Damn now that's cool; and pretty smart if you ask me. Once you have the design of the tranny figured out) that surely simplifies packaging a bit since it's all self contained in the tranny... no need to mess round figuring out how to interface the motors and all that stuff to the drivetrain for each platform. Just design the platform to accomodate the tranny and you're pretty much done.

This is the kind of innovation and we need from domestic car makers and their suppliers... we have the brains and the ability in this country... but so many good ideas seem to never make it to market, are diluted down or adopted by import brands before they make it to a domestic product... damn it's frustrating.

Go good old Yankee Inginuity!

The possibilies are endliess. The benefits are extraordinary. The electric motors can extend the range that the V8 runs in 4cyl mode. The electric motors can improve off-the-line performance. The electric motors could allow GM to use a smaller V8. GM's dual-mode could really bring hybrid technology more into the mainstream.

There was a thread that asked posters to list tech they'd like to see on the 5th gen, and i picked hybrids as a tech i wouldn't mind seeing.

Could you imagine a hybrid Ls2??? I bet you it would average over 30mpg combined city/highway. LsX engines are already great at conserving fuel for their level of performance, and this would be icing on the cake.

Not to mention, the two electric motors would actually improve performance too over the regular Ls2. Go look at the accord v6 hybrid vs v6, v6 hybrid is actually noticably faster than the regular v6. It's a brilliant idea: more performance on tap with the potential to get crazy fuel economy ratings.

Only thing that worries me is cost of replacing/servicing batteries, etc.... but i heard Honda/Toyota warranty them for 10 years.

A performance hybrid would be nice to see from GM, and i think the camaro is the perfect vehicle for it because it sells in realtively large volume.
