Gen V 5.3L V8 = 355HP
2014 Chevy Silverado priced from *$24,585, V8 gets better economy than Ford EcoBoost V6
Impressive numbers, great mix of power and economy. |
Re: Gen V 5.3L V8 = 355HP
Nice engine, hideous truck!

Re: Gen V 5.3L V8 = 355HP
Makes me think the 4.3L should get really close to 300hp & tq. And the 6.2 is going to be a beast.
|
Re: Gen V 5.3L V8 = 355HP
The question now is, will GM allow people to order the 5.3l on a regular cab short bed. Or will they be like Ford and not allow people to opt for that combo. (Eco boost on regular cab short bed)

Isn't the 3.6 HF V-6 already doing that (not sure of tq)? |
Re: Gen V 5.3L V8 = 355HP
It is a big deal. The 3.6 only makes about 270tq which is similar to the other car based V6s used by Ford and Ram. The new 4.3 should make really good torque which will put it at a completely different level compared to the competition. It will most likely have similar output to the current 5.3.

Re: Gen V 5.3L V8 = 355HP
The real question is what will the 6.2 make?
Loved my L9H Silverado. The old 5.3 was a dog in a 5400lb truck. My '11 6.2 CC was a better truck than my '09 EC in every conceivable way. If this new 6.2 makes 450hp I'm sold. |
Re: Gen V 5.3L V8 = 355HP
the 5.3L has never been a "dog" after any aftermarket tune ;) My 05 can spin the tires with only 3.23 gears.
I strongly doubt that the truck 6.2 will make the same power as the Corvette 6.2 ;) |
Re: Gen V 5.3L V8 = 355HP
The new 5.3 is impressive, the bad news is its going to be compared to Dodge's Hemi and Ford's 5.0 both are more powerful. Chevy use to always be on top in power when a new truck debuted, across all powertrains.
It will be interesting to see what the 4.3 gets rated. Being based on the newest SBC it should be torque heavy in output. |
Re: Gen V 5.3L V8 = 355HP
Is the new 5.3 DI or port injected? I'm guessing DI

1. Direct Injection 2. Cylinder Deactivation 3. Variable Valve Timing |

I thought I read that every engine would be available with every cab/bed combo. I know the crew cab trucks are getting the new V6 this time around.
In HP yes, but not is torque. The 4.3L will have more torque at low RPMs too. I don't think it will be 450HP, but I do think it will be more than Ford's 6.2L. My guess would be 420HP but with better fuel economy than Ford. The new 5.3L has 5 less HP, but 5 more torque than the Ford 5.0L so I'd say that is a wash, except that the GM engine gets 3 more mpg than the 5.0L wish is big. If GM only wanted 19mpg then I'm sure they could have gotten over 400HP from the 5.3L. The 6.2L is there for people that need more power, and that engine will top both Ford's and Dodge's. I'd still say GM is tops thanks to those impressive mileage numbers. |

If the 5.3 is jumping from 315 to 355 with the addition of DI you'd think the 6.2 would have a bigger jump then 403 to 420.
We will have to see what the Corvettes official HP numbers are. That should give us some clues. The last 6.2L was ~30hp more than the trucks 6.2L. 470HP Corvette, 440HP Silverado  |

I was going by HP per liter. I also think the old 5.3L should have been able to put out more power, GM had it tuned conservatively compared to all their other V8's

Also keep in mind that the 6.2 has AFM meaning it is probably closer in design to the 400hp L99. Now that GM has figured out how to get good power with AFM we should also see a pretty good power increase from the new 6.2. |
