No. The Chevrolet SS is based on the Australian-built Holden Commodore platform. Among the key attributes distinguishing it from the Caprice PPV will be a shorter wheelbase and a more luxuriously appointed interior.

The first production vehicle to be offered with an SS option package was the 1961 Impala — 453 were built with the performance upgrades. The all-new Chevrolet SS is true to Chevrolet’s performance lineage of power, excitement and pride of ownership.

What engine powers the Chevrolet SS?
The Chevrolet SS will be powered by the legendary small block 6.2L V8 (LS3) engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with TAPshift®. It is expected to deliver a GM-estimated 415 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft. torque, with a GM-estimated 0-60 mph time of 5 seconds.

What other performance characteristics will the Chevrolet SS have?
The Chevrolet SS will feature a performance-tuned chassis and steering with responsive handling, independent rear suspension, StabiliTrak® Electronic Stability Control System and Brembo® brakes, just to name a few.

What are its distinguishing exterior features?
The Chevrolet SS features a refined yet aggressive exterior design with a performance stance, rear spoiler and 19-inch alloy wheels and tires. Bright finish exhaust tips, Rainsense™ wipers, HID headlamps, foglamps and power, heated, auto-dimming (LH only) outside rearview mirrors all come standard.

What exterior colors will be available?
The Chevrolet SS will be available in five exterior colors: Red Hot 2, Phantom Black, Silver Ice, Mystic Green and Heron White.

The interior of the Chevrolet SS is refined and comfortable, with a spacious rear seat and ample cargo space. Standard features include leather-appointed heated and ventilated sport bucket front seats, 10-way power adjustments for both driver and passenger seats, power lumbar, and memory feature not only for the seats but the outside rearview mirrors. The interior also features standard dual-zone auto HVAC, Bose® Premium 9-speaker audio system, rearview camera, auto-dimming inside rearview mirror, leather-wrapped steering wheel, navigation, an 8-inch radio display with Chevrolet MyLink, alloy pedal covers, a color Head-Up Display, multi-color Driver Information Center (DIC), passive entry with push-button start, Automatic Parking Assist and much more.

What is Automatic Parking Assist?
One of the most highly developed technological systems today, Automatic Parking Assist is the efficient hands-free parking assistant feature that takes the guesswork out of reversing into tight spots. Using ultrasonic sensors, the system accurately detects viable parking spaces, determines approach angles and neatly parks the SS by taking over the steering. The driver manages throttle, braking and transmission while SS steers itself into any suitable reverse parallel or reverse angle (90-degree) parking space.

Q: What is Automatic Parking Assist?

A: An annoying feature that makes noise at anything that is less than 100ft away. 80% of the market has no interest in paying for it as an option, so we included it as standard equipment and increased the price of every vehicle by $300 in doing so.

Actually, Will, the SS naming idea was cooked up almost 10 years ago.

Before Camaro was back in development, GM was planning to create at least 3 midsized RWD coupes, one each Pontiac, Chevrolet, and Cadillac.

Cadillac's was to be the CTS coupe, which Wagoners let slip in an magazine article on Bob Lutz. Pontiac's was to be the next gen GTO (the one we got was sort of a stopgap till the next gen was ready. Chevrolet's version was to be called the SS.

Lack of money, a rapidly shifting North America Zeta program, and the Lutz's Zeta program freeze wound up stopping the entire program right before final approval.

In the end, the planned locally made GTO turned into an imported Pontiac G8 sedan, and after even a longer time, the idea of a premium Chevrolet SS coupe turned into an imported rebadged Holden Commodore SS with a Chevrolet bowtie.

FWIW, the domestic version of the G8 would have been the Grand Prix (shot down by adhering to Pontiac's naming policy), and the domestic version of the SS would have been the Impala (which was moved to Epsilon at the last moment when GM killed the last of their NA Zeta plans). Holden does benefit from drafts of the Zeta Impala's rear and interior, though.

Good possibility of the next Impala and Caprice converging into a single car on a CTS based Alpha platform for the 2016MY, though.... taking the SS with it.

So because Pontiac went all 'G' on us (which I always thought was ridiculously dumb anyway) an awesome marketing opportunity like "The all new RWD Grand Prix" had to become the "what's that G8 car again?". And then because Chevrolet can't decide what they want Impala to be, we get the generic 'SS' instead of 'Impala' or even 'Chevelle'.

I freely admit I was not a marketing student in college but does this really make sense to anyone? Not to mention the fact that they actually had plans to build a de facto new Camaro and not call it Camaro. That would have taken the cake.

I am not familiar with those adjectives and how they translate into color.
