Thumbs down

That is correct. I have an e-mail from GM Canada that states ....

Quote:

"Due to the variances in emissions standards of the United States and Canada, there are presently no plans to offer the Pontiac GTO on the Canadian market."

Hogwash! This has never been an issue before.

I'm still fuming ....

I always thought Canada's emissions laws and standards are not as strict as US' ? What's the problem?

I'm sure they could spare at least 2K.

If I remember right, a year ago, it was completely impossible to bring a Holden to the United States due to differences in saftey laws.

Exactly .... our emission laws aren't strict! My Province doesn't even have emissions testing. This is just plain old bullcrap.

The truth is that 2,000 units (and 2,000 customers) aren't worth the effort.

If they (GM) think I will loyally wait for them to make something in say 2006, they can forget it.

I emailed someone at GM communications-

It's not emissions.

But the bumpers- 3mph- good in Austrailia,
and the U.S.

Canada requires 5mph bumpers- too much money to change

Maybe the "next" GTO......but ir I'm lucky the next Camaro will be out then.

OK this might sound ignorant but .. they're spending $30 million for the Monaro-to-GTO redesign.. which includes new front and rear bumpers. While they're in the process, it seems like it would cost a trivial amount more to, say, redesign the little honeycomb absorber and impact bar under the bumper cover, to bring it up to 5mph resistance from 3mph resistance. Seems like it would be chump change compared to $30 million, and they're redesignming the bumpers anyway. I don't see the issue.

Design and tooling is only part of the cost equation... crash testing and governmental certification is the other part...

It probably adds up to a big chunck of cash. Must make the return not worth it, otherwise, why wouldn't they do it?

I think the real issue is they want to saturate the muscle-car-hungry US market with as much of their desperate last card as possible after the very disappointing "hiatus" announcement which pissed off millions. They want to limit the amount of hate-mail and brand loyalty loss by maximizing the offering to Holden's capacity. Till something new comes along, 05 06, whenever. I think it'll be a tough call whether it works or not.

Unhappy

So what happens if I buy the car in US and want to transfer it to Canada for own personal use... What kinds of things would I have to do? Or would this be impossible as the car is not certified to be used in Canada?

I was looking forward to this GTO :-) but it kind of sux it's not available here.

That pretty much nails it on the head. Though $30 million is a good chunk of change, it's only expected to be $500 per vehicle over an expected 3 year run at 20,000 cars per year. If it costs say another $20 million for Canada yet only 1-2000 are sold that's another grand per car for no extra profit.

It sucks, but that how car companies think.
