Is anybody considering buying a Challenger over the Camaro?
I am just curious. Yesterday, a beautiful SRT-8 Challenger pulled up next to me at a traffic light and I could not help but drool at such a sexy car. It was the amazing orange color but black would be just as sexy. I would personally wait for the bright be released since that is th color I would get. Of course I am waiting to see and test drive the new Camaro in the flesh. So, anybody else even considering a Challenger? I built one on Dodge's website and it came out to about $42k. I am sure dealers are more than happy to go lower than that right now however. Remember, performance is NOT everything
.
.
I think the Dodge is more retro and I like the bigger size since I had a couple of Buick GS's and 1 GTO and 3 442's fronm the 70's. So I probably would be ordering a new 6speed RT right now if I hadn't lost my job in the banking industry last August and now working for less than 1/2 after being out of work for over 5 months. It's more of a mid size car than a pony car.
i did go with the challenger...styling was a big deciding factor. the performance is there too regardless what the mags say, street cred is growing with more and more people learning how to race these monsters. i wish i could afford to have a camaro ss though as well! have the best of both worlds.
I am seriously considering buying a Challenger over Camaro.
Why?
The Challenger would be my only car, therefore it would be beneficial if I had a car that had a decently large trunk and a back seat that can hold full sized adults (the new Camaro's trunk is even notably smaller than even the Mustang's!).
At the same time, I want a car that's very fast & capable..... and has a manual. I was setting up to buy the G8 ST.....till GM killed it
... and use it for work and keep the B4C. The Challenger R/T is the roomiest, cheapest, least expensive go-fast thingy with 2 doors and a manual.
My Thunderbird SCs were the perfect cars for me, and I did sacrafice alot when I made my B4C my only car. The fold-down seats and hatchback take up alot of my occasional need for a large space to carry various things I need to both work related and personal. But I do occasionally take the family out. The back seat of my current B4C (or the similarly sized 2010 Camaro) isn't going to suit my now 5 year old forever. If GM hadn't killed the Zeta GTO, it would have been perfect.
The Camaro is still very much on my radar, and by the time I'm ready to purchase, alot of things could happen. I might decide that I really don't need a trunk that big (Challenger's trunk is bigger than even the Impala's), I might be wrong in the signs of life and revival that now seem to be taking place at Chrysler.
Because of the economy, I want to pay a good portion of my next vehicle in cash, so it's going to likely be at least a year. By then, dealers will be off their inevitable "market adjustment" kick, Challenger will have a durability record, the new 5.0 Mustang GT will be out, and I'll have a real choice.
Then again, I just might come across a once in a lifetime deal on a used Cobra or GTO.... deals become steals when you have full cash in hand in a weak economy.

Challenger is cool, but too retro for me. I like the modern look of the Camaro. I have yet to sit in one of drive one so I don't know how I'd feel about the size.
It is too bad they don't make a G8 coupe (and call the V8 version GTO) for those that want something larger.

At NAIAS 06, I couldn't see buying a Challenger over a Camaro. Now that I've seen both, and driven one of them? Challenger all the way, for me. The new Camaro's interior is winning no praise, here. I simply hate the design. There is no better way for me to say it.
On the outside, I think the Camaro is a little bit better looking for sure, but the inside of it flat kills it for me. Oh well...I've been trying to get Wifey to let me trade her Comp G in for a V6 Challenger, but she isn't working with me
In reality, I am considering neither...after several years of debating (while restoring my RS), I've decided my next purchase is a 20th TTA

I went to the San Jose Auto show in early January. The Challenger wasn't even on my list of cars to see.
I was toying with buying a used Lotus Elise (I know, very impractical) and I wanted to see one in person.
Also on display was a silver camaro (still looks better in person than in pictures), but for some reason it just doesn't grab me. I have followed the new camaro since the concept was unveiled and really wanted to like it enough to buy one (having owned a camaro in the 70's) but it just isn't for me.
They also had a new mustang convertible (to me, the newly styled front end is a work of art, but the back end is terrible, what were they thinking?).
Also on display was the solstice coupe, I like the solstice coupe. More storage space than the vert. A bit more practical than the Elise. It bugs me that the rear coupe panel does not follow the tail lights (part of it hangs over the tail light, part of it doesn't, a nit pick but it bothers me to no end). Also the interior could use a little pizazz. If not for the challenger I would probably buy a soltice GXP coupe.
But then I saw the Challenger
. For some reason it just grabbed me. It looks good from all angles. I don't think the interior is bad, not anything to write home about but not bad. My ony real nit with the challenger is with the "turn signal headlights", kind of strange, but that's all I can really complain about. I was very surprised how much I liked the Challenger. So I ordered one on January 14th!
I just hope Chrylser doesn't go under.

Just an observation.
53% of the people here have at the very least considered the Dodge Challenger.... essentially a bigger Camaro made by another company that probably a minority here thinks will survive.
I can't help but think of the mistake GM made in not going through with the new-gen GTO which would have been out last year, and would have been additional sales Pontiac would have.
Challeneger is the only Chrysler car that's having a very serious shortage (now up to $5000 markups) since Chrysler temporarily shut down it's plants.

I thought the whole idea of the Brampton plant was to be able to adjust the mix of vehicles depending on demand. 300 and Charger demand is very low, Challenger is high, yet from what I read on Challengertalk.com they can only build a Challenger every third car.
If I decided the Camaro didn't have enough interior space I'd probably just get a G8. It really all comes down to the more modern look for me.
