Pretty nifty ride. I would drive one for sure!

DailyTech - 2013 Ford Explorer "Sport" Airs, Gets EcoBoost

New premium SUV is packed with Ford's high-tech features, options

The beloved SUV is finally starting to shed its "gas guzzler" distinction, thanks to vehicles like the new 2013 Explorer SUV from Ford Motor Comp. (F). Ford unveiled this morning its upgraded model, which brings a new marquee submodel, the Ford Explorer Sport.

Ford has been putting a lot of pressure on fellow automakers with its premium package consumer vehicles, which often offer features sets that are quite competitive with its rivals' luxury brand vehicles.

The Explorer Sport has been empowered with Ford's twin-turbocharged, gasoline direct injection (GDI) equipped "Ecoboost" branded V6 engine, which previously popped up in the 2010 Ford Taurus SHO, the 2010 Ford Flex, the 2011 F-150, and a pair of Lincoln branded vehicles (the MKS and MKT).

Ford did not list the exact horespower of its latest tuned Ecoboost V6, but it's expected to deliver over 350 hp, while offering up 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway.

Ford says that's anticipated to be 3/2 mpg better (city/highway, respectively) than Chrysler's Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango R/T with 5.7L Hemi engines, and 3/4 mpg better than the Land Rover Range Rover Sport (Land Rover is a Tata Motor Comp. (BSE:500570) subsidiary previously owned by Ford).

Aside from beating its rivals by double digit percentages in the fuel economy department, the new SUV is rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The model also comes with special new trim and the rejuvenated distribution of MyFord Touch, which was added to the base Explorer model in 2011. The vehicle also has a high-tech set of options, which include Active Park Assist (APS), Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), and Push Button Start.

In July of last year, Ford introduced a "lesser" four-cylinder EcoBoost version of the Explorer.

Slappy... you've been here long enough. Why'd you post this in the 2010-2012 Camaro News section.

Haha, my bad. I didn't even realize I did it and never would have if you didn't point it out. I just assumed I posted it here. I went and looked in the Camaro news section and I do see it was moved. I must have been more tired than I thought :).

I think I'd take the 3/2 mpg hit and drive a V8.

Have you driven an EB V6 equipped vehicle??

If not, do. There is a reason why the EB F150 has been much more popular than Ford anticipated.

I like the new Explorer, but something seems off on this sport model. I think its the gray plastic trim. I think the Sport model would look much better without that trim (or at least make it body colored), which makes it look like a base model. Also the tire and wheel combo size doesn't look as aggressive like on the Edge Sport. And last but not least the luggage racks need to be deleted from the Sport model.

I think the Edge Sport looks much better, but unfortunately it doesn't come with the Ecoboost six.

Anyone have any idea how much this sport package will cost?

I like the new explorer, but we didn't even shop one last year becuase of towing requirements.

Honestly, if it weren't for towing capabilities why would anyone buy most of the modern crossovers when you can get a much more efficient car?

Crossovers are so popular because they give the buying public what they want. The higher seating position of an SUV, with the cargo spaces they have come to expect (you know, to haul dogs around), but with better road manners and fuel economy.

It is no surprise that they sell well. I have seen plenty of crossovers on logging trails and in the backwoods. I have never seen an AWD sedan in the same places. The reality is, they are what you would call a lifestyle vehicle. While many folks like the idea of being outdoorsy, most never get around to it. Thus, they buy a vehicle that makes them look like they are.

The vast majority of people who bought traditional SUV's never tow anything with them.

Well, unfortunately people don't buy station wagons, so those have all but disappeared. Effectively, the Explorers and Traverses of the world have replaced the Taurus and Caprice wagons of yore.

Towing is one benefit, but cargo space is another. The Taurus sedan can't match the cargo space of the Explorer, regardless of towing capabilities.
