5.3 Impala's are some of the best sleepers out there especially from a slight roll they get going pretty well! It's just the tranny holding up is the problem.

The problem is not about speed, it's tradition. Heck, most midsize 4-door's now a days are faster than a LT1 Impala.
Yes, it's tradition. Because there is absolutely no tradition of putting the Impala name on a bland, toaster-esque mid-sizer, then making a hot-rodded version of said mid-sizer with the "SS" badge.

GM was clearly reaching.

Well I did not have to write it. The funny thing is the SS moniker fit the Impala SS at the end than any other time late in its life. Take a vanilla car that was just a placeholder for a name and make it a real performance car. Yea it did not have RWD but sure as hell fit the traditional idea of what making a muscle car follows..or am I missing something..they stuffed the biggest possible engine into that car..not unlike what they traditionally did back in the heyday..

If I could find a decent one for cheap I would buy it for a DD family car.

And it's good that GM put a stout transmission behind that 5.3 in the Impala....oh wait...

Another example is Jetta with Bora badges. Have seen an "Integra", "Skyline", and "Bora" all relatively recently which is why it was on my mind.
I wasn't talking about doing a conversion by taking a Caprice and changing into a Holden. I was stating someone could take the bland Caprice and dress it up with some with wheels, spoilers, and maybe a body kit from one of the Holden cars, but still retain it as a Chevy Caprice.

Sorry my original post wasn't clear.

The pic. on top (which is a photoshopped Cadillac XTS) the green house looks close to the car Ed Welburn partly unveiled on the Chevy:100 show. The new Impala is suppose to be on the extended Epsilon II platform same as the XTS?

Isn't this the new Hyundai Genesis or Azera with a Chevy/Cadillac nose 'shopped onto it?

I hope the new Impala looks almost nothing like that. I thought it was supposed to look better than the Camaro? Someone said that...

I highly doubt it will look better than the Camaro. I really wish GM would hit one out of the park with the new Impala. Now with Pontiac gone and no sedans like the Grand Prix around, I am hoping the Impala will rise to the level of a nice sports sedan like the Nissan Maxima.

The car Welburn partial unveiled in Chevy 100 was much better looking. However it was more Malibu sized than Impala sized. With Malibu getting slightly bigger, Impala is supposed to move upscale and possibly slight larger. The second photo (posted by Scotty... looks like a photoshopped VW) just doesn't "upscale" to me.

The idea is to move those who would buy Impala will instead move to Malibu. Meanwhile, the new Impala is to be to Malibu what the Taurus is to Fusion. A rather large, FWD/AWD stylish big sedan that to a large degree is a flagship for the division.
