NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- An 800-horsepower version of the Ford Mustang will be unveiled at the New York Auto Show later this month.

The 2012 Shelby GT500 Super Snake will be built by Shelby American Inc., a Las Vegas-based performance car company. Shelby works with Ford Motor Co. (F, Fortune 500) to create various high-performance versions of the iconic Mustang.

While the base Super Snake will produce a mere 750 horsepower, those who feel the need for more power will be able to add an optional upgrade package that will provide 50 more. Shelby provides no warranty on the engine and transmission, in either case.

The base version of the outgoing 2011 Super Snake produces 630 horsepower, although no-warranty option packages have been available in recent months to push horsepower in those cars up to as much as 800, as well.

The 2012 Super Snake will be legal to drive on public roads on all 50 states, the carmaker promised, and it will cost less than $100,000.

Prices for the 2011 Super Snake start about $80,000 in total, including the separate purchase of a car from Ford -- a factory-produced Shelby GT500 -- and the necessary modifications.

"Shelby American has a rich history at the New York International Auto Show," said John Luft, president of Shelby American. in an announcement. "The very first Shelby car was introduced there in 1962, as well as the 1968 and 2008 Shelby GT500KR and the 2006 Shelby Hertz GT-H."

The original partnership between Ford and Shelby American founder Carroll Shelby, one that created Mustang-based performance cars that can be worth millions of dollars today, ended in 1969. Ford and Shelby entered into a new agreement in 2003 that has produced a new line of Shelby Mustangs, some built by Ford Motor Co. and others built at the Shelby American factory.

For some reason I like the way the Super Snake hood works with the current styling but I'm pretty meh on anything coming out of Carrol Shelby's actual shop.

Unrelated but a link in the article did produce something interesting

A Ford GT 350 sold for about $6,000 in 1965, or about $32,000 adjusted for inflation. Today

Shelby provides no warranty on the engine and transmission, in either case.
that sucks. I think I would rather buy a GT500 and bump the hp myself if I was going to void the warranty anyway. A lot of people would rather just buy the car from someone though i suppose.

This is a simple way for them to get around warranty claims...

Instead of an aftermarket shop installing a supercharger, engine blows, remove supercharger take back to dealer for warranty repair... now they can just say hey you have a Super Snake. Sucks to be you!

And save yourself a bunch of money, just about every mechanical piece is available right from Ford's FRPP catalog. The wheels and body parts seem to only be the actual Shelby pieces and are probably outragously priced to "protect exclusivity"

I suppose thats the real draw for the car though, people consider the Super Snake a real Shelby unlike the 07-12 GT500's <-- then again something these Shelby purists seem to forget when they go ape**** over a 68 GT500KR is that until the modern conversions, the last real Shelby produced was in 1967, afterwhich Ford took over production with the 68+ cars with the 69 and 70 Shelby's really just being tarted up Mach 1's (the 70's where left over 69's with updated VINs)

What exactly would you do with 800 horsepower that you can't do with 600 horsepower while keeping a warranty?

gain inches on your E-penis!

I wonder how many people forking over nearly 100 big smackers would use the car for drag racing or running flat-out at a dry lake or something like that? My guess is not many, so its all back to pumping up ego.

That said, it will make for some good TV when Tanner Foust and Paul Tracy do the supercar shootout thing.
