2011 V6 Mustang vs 2010 V6 Camaro RS

Well - I remember in the Motor Trend preview of the 2011 Mustang - they were quoting about 3,500lbs for the V6, and about 3,700lbs for the GT.
And a 3,750lbs, 412hp Mustang GT should match up pretty evenly with a 3,860 lbs 426hp Camaro SS.
But if the V6 Mustang is truely about 3,550 lbs - then the v6 Camaro is going to need one of two possible solutions to keep up. 1st is and extra 15 hp (about 320hp). or the 2nd which would be a 80-100 lbs of weight reduction and a 6 to 10 hp boost.
But then personally - I think all 5th gen Camaros could stand to drop at least 100 lbs.

the v6 in the camaro and mustang are pretty equal. the difference in straight line acceleration is 200lbs. figure the camaro will out 60' the stang. the stang will have to catch up. just a fact. 305hp and tiny tires.
the REAL difference in the cars is suspension tuning. the V6 stang has the 2010 GT standard suspension. it will outhandle its direct competitors handily.
the stang chasis is decent. camaro chasis is better. just too heavy.
the v6 stang is going to embarrass 1973-2009 mustang gt's, and its going to kill them on the circle track too. 100 lbs less than a 2005-2009. more power. only slightly less torque. better gear ratios and 6 speeds. 7000 rpm shift points. true 4 cam VCT.
if the camaro just weighed 3400 like the v6 stang it would do the same.
back in 1992 the mustang was in the same boat. engineers were pushing hard to use the MN-12 chasis for the 1994 stang. it would have weighed 3800lbs. it would have had IRS, but the weight would have been prohibitive. imagine 215hp 4.6 and 3800 lbs.
also lucky for the stang that the Lincoln LS/S-type jag chasis was available. the 2005 stang is based on that chasis. weight reductions got it down to 3550.
this chasis continues to serve the stang well. upgrades keep it competitive. hope the 2012/2014 chasis is this light. that can all change very quickly. it could be larger and heavier.

I wouldn't think it would get bigger and heavier. Ford has stated that their upcoming redesigns should be lighter, as they are making a concerted effort to make them so.
However, I guess we will see.

I am going to go on record and say there is no way in hell the camaro will out 60 ft the mustang. Better gearing will get it off the line faster and lighter weight will help as well. Do you really think Ford is going to release a base V6 car that does nothing but spin off the line???? Thats the model that the most inexperianced drivers will have. Traction control wil make sure the call does not sit and spin. The real battle will be at the end of the 1/4.

Personally - I still believe that Chevy need to do a couple of things for the 2011 Camaro to make it a fair & equal competition for the V6 models.
1st is they need to put the Camaro diet - by dropping about 80-100 lbs. Which would actually be good for both the V6 & V8 models.
2nd is they need to boost the V6 for the Camaro at least 315 hp to make up for the weight difference.

These cars are cool, but they have no torque, are heavier than LT1 Camaros, and cost so much more than what you could pick one up for these days.
P.S. Any LT1 guys running bone stock better get modding. I don't want one of these things giving us an even worse name. I'll worry about the ZR1's. Stock guys, you keep the V6 Mustangs in check!

I am guessing in real world pricing these are going to be pretty close. In my area it looks like real world pricing is about a grand more for the Camaro:
http://nra.zag.com/configurator.html...frontPricing=Y
Also, you can get a GT for 28.8K here but the SS is $31,400.

And more and more, the Mustang really continues to impress me. I love the way the Camaro looks outside, but it seems EVERYTHING else about the Mustang (interior, handling, weight, size, powertrain) is better with the Mustang.
This "clean sheet of paper" F5 is really, really starting to let me down Here's looking forward to an F6 Alpha Camaro...I'll stick with my old, inferior third and 4th gens, thanks

Yup.
SIDENOTE: Get pictures of your new T/A up ASAP. Come on Jason, it's been like a week now!
BTW, I just picked up a blue Lear Seigler Conteur interior for my '83 yesterday. Needs to be redone though. It'll keep me busy until the 6th gen comes...
