I'd say that the number one reason is power and weight. If we cut the power in half and the weight by a thousand pounds on most small cars, they'd probably get close to 50 highway. But people don't want slow cars and with today's safety standards piling on the pounds, it nearly requires exotic materials to lose weight where it's possible.

Keep in mind, the L1 and Aptera are actually considered motorcycles. (They need that classification to pass US crash standards.)

From article above:

"But, since it does have four wheels, it will have to meet all of the normal safety regulations for cars."

Max speed of 75mph... ouch

Odd, I thought the L1 was a three-wheeler. My mistake.

I wonder what the cost of it will be. This article is a few months old, but look at the materials they are using to build this car.

CFRP, Al, Ti and Mg will need to be used as alternative materials in cars more often in order to reduce weight with our current crash standards and personal requirements for gadgets.
I am a designer on the 787 so I am quite familiar with lightweight materials.
Aluminum is relatively cheap compared to the other metals and could be easily used. The others have a bit more of a supply constraint right now.

I regularly hit 80 going with the flow of traffic. Plus if the MAX is 75, then it likely will take a while to even hit 60, unless it's 75mph limit is computer programmed in...

well its looking like your not going to get to much more out of things with out some sacrifice along the way. im pretty confident in saying that having a max of 75-80 is more then enough even if its a gearing issue and takes time to get to speed in most situations.

i dont know of any speed limit higher then 70 miles an hour and i can tell you for a fact that at 75-80 mph my cobalts mpg start to drop like a rock.
