2008 Geely (China)
2008 Geely (China)
Look out for this Chinese made Yugo.
While the cars look like complete butt funk, they are pricing the 4 door sedan below 10,000 dollars with comparible features to 20k cars.
If they make enough sales from this, they will be able to make enough profits to hire a better engineering and design team and if they get a clue quick enough, they will have a competitive product by 2013.
Or they will keep improvements to a minimum, and keep the same platform, and go belly up in the US by 2016.
Judging from info I've received about them, either one could be true.

Disclaimer - Before all the "imports have better quality" wood worms come out, I have always maintained that I do not accept lesser quality or excuses in a domestic vehicle. If I buy one and something is wrong or breaks, I am as courteous and cordial as humanly possible while insisting that the manufacturer (or dealer in most cases) make it right. I will not take no for an answer, I will not accept patial solutions, and I WILL NOT GO AWAY either. After they got to know me and realized the above was going to happen, I have had nothing but resounding success with my purchases and local dealers.
My "fight" (if we want to call it that) is not one of frustration, but one that is necessary to make the domestic supplier improve themselves. I am fighting to make them better (if you can believe that). It is my perrogative and philosophy, and I live by it on a daily basis - whether looking at cars on a Chevy/Ford lot or buying widgets in Wal-Mart.
We would all be well-advised to become a little more aware of what we are spending our money on and where that money is going.

Agree, after a visit to Germany this last july it was really interesting to see them go out of their way to buy a German engineered/manufactured product. And even use German suppliers in the manufacturing arena...
Sad to say not so prevelant in America these days. Our spoiled chillin' just don't get it...

Lol, I'm no dollinger,
No I studied business while I studied design and engineering. The automotive industry has always fascinated me.
You can buy a brand new midsize car there for about 5,000 US dollars.
What they need to do is develop a new platform the accept RWD or AWD. Then they need to develop a single series of engines, i4, V6 and V8.
They need to hire a good engineering firm, and they should offer a program to design students, to sponsor them with tuition, and in return have them work on designs for the company either in class (okayed through the school though).
Then they need to make that 1 platform usable for;
small 4 door (not compact)
i4t and V6
MSRP of 12,000 base
midsize 2 door AWD option
i4t V6 and V8
MSRP of 14,000 base
Midsize 4 door AWD option
i4t V6 and V8
MSRP of 14,000 base
Large 4 door
V6 and V8
MSRP of 16,000
Midsize SUV AWD
V6 and V8
MSRP of 14,000
Midsize ridgeline line truck AWD
V6 and V8
MSRP of 15,000
This line up would be introduced over about 3-4 years. First the Midsize and small 4 doors, then the 2 door sedan midsize SUV, then the large 4 door and truck.
Remember, with the manufacturing costs in China, they can build these cars for under 10,000.
Instead, I would set it up to pay the workers higher wages than any other factory. For example, if the average is 90 a month (about avg) I would pay about 450 a month (and give annual raises). I would also do community projects in the area of the factory, and develop a good solid work force. Whic would still keep manufacturing cost to a minimum, but it would create a dedicated workforce.
Yes, the quality is not there, right now. But it was not there on Hyundais either in the 80s- 90s. It will take time, but with the right type of vehicles, it will come faster.
Also, these companies are geared up to make a profit off a few thousand units a year. Instead of needing 100k units to survive, they can do well with 10k units.
Finally, I would send them to Europe, south America and Australia 1 year before here, they all have had Chinese made cars and Motorcycles, so it could be a good idea to launch there before here.
If I could run their show, you wouldn't see a US launch until 2010. Because they need better product.
