Autocross Your V6, No Really

I just want to enlighten all the V6 owners about autocross. I talk to V6 Camaro and Mustang owners all the time and they keep telling me they can't possibly autocross a V6. Bull.

The current STX class champ in my local club is driving a V6 Mustang with stock motor. He beats V8 powered Mustangs in his class every week, and if you compare his times to other classes most V8 Camaros can't catch him either.

"But my Camaro is stock."
We have Honda Civics, Ford Festivas, Volkswagens and Berettas show up all the time, do you think your Camaro is any less of a sports car than them, even stock? Last year I ran an 89 Taurus SHO and the only real upgrade was the tires. I can't count the number of times a Camaro or Mustang driver refused to participate because their car was stock. I would usually leave them with, "Yeah, not surprised your scared of my Taurus when all you have to drive is a Camaro."

Now get out there and go play cars!

Amen to that!

One of the quickest cars I ever had the privilige to borrow on an autocross course was a stripper '89 V6 Camaro 5-speed car.

I used to autocross my v6 camaro all the time!! I'd run with GT mustangs and IROC camaros, and once I turbocharged it, I could hang with C5 vettes!

I've since sold it, and I can't wait to autox my z28. I just need to find a course nearby.

Eh, you can race anything, but once anything goes non stock, it turns everything around, also, do not forget about driver error.

In my opinion it's better to race your car in the stock class if you're a beginner. You'll more than likely be a whole lot more competitive.

I'm just worried about blowing stuff up

We normally get 3-4 runs that last about a minute each. If your cars in good mechanical shape there really should not be a problem with 3-4 minutes of spirited driving. The Camaro is designed for aggressive driving so you don't need to beef it up any in order to Autocross. The tires you race on will wear faster than normal, and you will not get as many miles out of your brakes. My car has over 250k miles on it and I am running in 5 events this month.

If you car is held together with hope and duct tape and you would not dare drive far from home, then no I do not recommend you do any spirited driving. Your car should be in reasonable condition before doing any kind of motorsports.

I can't get any of my friends to go autocrossing with me.
