Autocross Tires
 

I am running the stock 16" wheels on my 94 Z28. The car is a nice weather weekend toy and Autocrosser. I am looking for a summer tire with good lateral traction. I would rather not kill myself if it rains, but I will not be doing any high-performance driving in the rain.

I was looking around the web and have found BFGoodrich G Force, Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval, Bridgestone Potenze RE750, Falken Ziex, and Hankook Ventus.

Anyone try any of those?

In case anyone else looks for an answer I went ahead and got Falken Ziex 912s. They worked very well at the last event. While not as grippy as other I looked at they should last the year being autocross & street tires. They were about than $100 each at a local shop.

in dry weather i would go bfg KD's. wet/dry goodyear f1 gs d3's. Little cheaper and wet/dry bfg kdw 2's

I've got Hankook K104's on my car for its street tires, but I've run them on the track a few times, and they work pretty well for a true street tire :). Granted, they're at least ~2 - 3 seconds slower per lap than R-compounds, but hey, they last a lot longer, and I can drive to/from the track on them.

Although this year, I've buckled and bought true R-comps (Hoosier R6's) for competition :thumb:. For autocross, then you'd want the A6's. Once you run R-comps, I think it's hard to go back to running street tires!! :rolleyes:

I've had great success with the Potenza RE730, and the RE750 is supposed to be better yet. A few weeks ago I had the privilige of riding passenger in a Potenza equipped Mazda Miata on the road from the mountains of Redwood City, CA to Half Moon Bay, south of San Fransisco. The road was a nail-biting, scream-like-a-little-girl kind of ride, and we were in the lead followed by a BMW and a Porsche. They never passed us, and the Bridgestones hooked nearly as well as race-specific tires.

Firehawk SZ50 255/50/16 (220 treadwear) would have been the hot ticket for you in STS

if they still made em :(

with back-dating/updating rule, you could run 17x9.5 replica wheels and 275 or 285/40/17 street tires in STS. the kumho MX has 160 treadwear and rather low priced

His car is not legal for STS (max displacement there is 3.1L)

Even if it were legal, the max tire width in STS is a 225 and max wheel width is 7.5 inches.

The car would be legal (although uncompetitive) in STU where there is no dispacement limit and a max tire size of 275.

I run in STO class, that is a local class that is for anyone on street tires. The car is too modded to be in stock, but not modded enough to do well in any of the Prep or Mod classes. The mods are mostly emissions controls that broke and were removed (air pump) or things that broke and were not replaced with stock legal parts (like my tranny). I figure I will hang out in STO as I work on the car and hope to put it in a better class next year.

Still really liking the Falken's. Thanks for the other suggestions though. Will check them out next time.
