VFN Hood Question...
 

I was wondering if it had holes for the underhood insulation on the 93-97 hoods? Our stock hoods leak water = no good for the opti and in general. Unless their hoods took out those imperfections?

A factory under hood insulation would look mighty stupid under a cowl-hood.

As far as I know it doesn't have any provisions for it anyway, theres no cross frame like the stock hood.

I know it doesn't help exactly, but my ASCD cowl hood has no provisions for the insulator.

Well I don't care how it looks when it is protecting my engine from water. I don't get how it would look any more or less stupid under cowl hood. The hood does nothing, it is for show.

I suppose I can use autobody sealant and paint if the VFN hoods have the same problems as the stock.

Do the stock Camaro hoods leak? Never noticed that problem on my Firebird hood, stocker or the WS6 hood. Relying on the insulation to trap water would seem to be a bad idea. If your hood leaks, fix the leak, don't try and cover it up with insulation.

never noticed the water leak problem on my stock hood, or my new vfn... i didn't know water could go through metal and/or fiberglass hoods... i guess if you open the hood in the rain, you might get a small leak... not sure why the stock insulation is there int he first place.

I think it's more for heat than moisture.

My 2" cowl hood from VFN does not have provisions for the factory insulation. I thought of it as just another weight savings.:D

Yes, they leak from 2 places - where the plastic hood vent inserts slide in and in very small cracks and holes around the metal part of the removable hood vents, only not so bad on the latter. But they are still 2 separate pieces on the hood, therefore they have no seal. If you look on the inside of the insulation, you can see where the channels are that go right to the edges of your windshield and expel out the drain holes. I guess I'll just be using sealer and paint.

And it's hardly for heat, this is a myth that your paint will bubble from heat without the insulation. :nuts:

I can't see what else it would be for. I know it's not going to get hot enough for the paint to bubble, but it has to insulate against heat to some degree. I can't see it being for moisture. I could be wrong though. I've been wrong before.

And I think it'd be easy enough to remove the inserts and put a bead of silicone around the inside to seal the moisture out. A couple dollars and maybe a half hour of your time would do it.

It may not bubble the paint away (a black 4th gen hood in the summer sun will get stupid hot all on its own) but the excess heating and cooling should be avoided.

Insulation is also used to cut down unwanted noise.
