Steering Wheel recovering options?

My stock steering wheel is starting to get kind of rough between the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions, is there a way to recover the outside of the wheel besides using a gaudy steering wheel cover from Advanced Auto or getting an aftermarket wheel?

I have the same problem, mine sounds worse. I've looked into it a bit and it seems like this is the best option without getting a whole new wheel, not sure if it's possible to tear down the current wheel and recover it, of course that's a pain too, with air bags and sensors and crap to deal with.

It's possible. An upholstery shop that specializes in automotive stuff should be able to cut the threads holding the old one on and sew a new one on there, perhaps using the old one as a pattern on new leather.

I don't know the exact way it is done, I just know it can be done.

I'd call the shop first, to make sure they do indeed do steering wheels.
